flea markets?

are there any good flea markets in the burbs or city?  I've been to swap-o-rama in Alsip & it's junk.  I'm looking for cool home decor stuff or furniture, cool scarves or accessories, stuff like that. not some old guys rusted tools or packages of socks! I've been to one on the city years ago that had a lot of antique & vintage stuff that was fun to walk around. give me some ideas of where they're located & what days/times.

Re: flea markets?

  • Hm, I know during the summer (not sure exactly when) there's a huge flea market at the old Rosemont Horizon (what's it called now??) on the weekends...

  • I'd never set foot in swap-o-rama - you are right - its junk.  You JUST missed Kane COunty Flea Market last weekend, it falls on the first weekend of each month and you can google it and find the schedule.  they also have the all night flea market etc listed there.  We went last weekend and were disappointed compared to past visits (i've been going for YRS).  they are doing some construction so they had fewer vendors - but overall - it is still leaps and bounds above swapo.

I think Kendall county (yorkville) does some but not sure if they are regular.  I would recom. Kane County

  • i forgot - there is also one in the city - cant remember the name of it but its where Marche etc is - but further West.  THey had quite a bit and I think its regular thing in the summer - you may be able to find it on metromix or city of chicago events page
  • I second Kane County - the majority of the furniture and fun home accessories in my house are from there.  Everything is unique and you can talk them down on the price.

I agree though that this past weekend was no good.  I hope it gets better by summer.

I've heard good things about the Sandwich market but haven't been out there yet.

  • september1-  did you hear what they built that new building for - or why that whole area was torn up?  I am concerned they are cutting way back - alot of the vendors I liked were always in the center area.  there were a couple of booths that didnt show and I was bummed.  Did you buy anything last weekend?

  • I don't remember what they were doing with all the construction.  I sent my sister an email - she was talking about it with one of the vendors she bought something from so hopefully she'll remember.

I didn't buy one thing - I think it's the first time ever going that I didn't find something!  I agree - a lot of the vendors in that center area weren't there.  Some were displaced along the fence on the North side but I didn't see a lot of my favorites.  I also thought a lot of stalls had a bunch of crap - more swap-o-rama stuff then I've ever seen before.

    Did you buy anything?!

  • I ended up with a bird bath made with a copper stand and pretty blue glass bowl; and a flower arrangement from a woman in the food building - she did arrangements with feathers.
  • I was at Kane County last weekend too.  What a gorgeous day!  I live in the townhomes right down the street, so I was excited to go.  It was only my second time since moving here.  I also left with nothing, though.  I was dissapointed with a lot of the furniture.  We should make a GTG at the flea market next month!
