Baltimore nestie needs suggestions

I'm a Baltimore nestie visiting Chicago for a girls' weekend with my sister over Memorial Day weekend and need some advice!

I'll be flying into O'Hare.  What's the best (and/or cheapest?) way to get downtown?  We're staying at the Swissotel.

What are some must-do activities?  Anything to avoid?

What about restaurants- we'd like to do a great brunch one day, deep dish, maybe Indian?  Also, my sister is a vegetarian so we'll need restaurants that are veggie-friendly.

Thanks in advance- I know my questions are kind of general!

Re: Baltimore nestie needs suggestions

  • The cheapest way to get downtown from O'Hare is the Blue Line CTA (transitchicago.com).   BUT, that takes you into the Loop and not really close your hotel.   So you'd have to either walk or taxi from the subway to your hotel.   Depending on the time of day, a taxi will cost $40+ from O'Hare to downtown.

If its warm... do a boat tour.  The architectural river boat tours are awesome.  highly recommended.   and get drinks at the lounge at the top of the Hancock Tower.

I've got a list of my favorite restaurants in my bio.   feel free to check them out and let me know if you have any questions.   I've heard pretty good thing about Gaylord's Indian restaurant.
Brought to you by IVF, ICSI, limited fert, and oocyte cryopreservation.
    Because we're fancy like that.

  • Also...  if you want something a little fun and different (but very chicago) check out Green Zebra for vegetarian food.

  • Green Zebra is a great suggestions for veggie fare.

My favorite pizza is Lou Malnati's.

I also love Spring, N9NE and one sixtyblue, though they may not be the most very veggie-friendly options.

The Architectual Boat Tour is really great -- as is all tours put on by the Chicago Architecture Foundation and Chicago Historical Society.

You should also catch a show at Second City (Between Barak and a Hrad Place is great) or Steppenwolf.  The Chicago Shakespeare Theatres is also great, and not far from the Swissotel.

For shopping, I love the boutiques around North/Damen/Milwaukee in Bucktown, Division Street in Wicker Park (next to Bucktown), and on Armitage in Lincoln Park.

Hope you have a great trip!
  • Due is a great pizza place downtown that is fairly convenient to your hotel.

The architectural boat tour is great, but often sells out.  You might want to buy your tickets a day before or early that day to guarantee a seat.

It is always fun to have drinks at the Signature Lounge on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Building.  It is a great way to see the skyline without paying just to go to an observation deck.

I recommend a cab to the Swissotel.  The el will be cheaper, but it will not take you close to your hotel.  You will have to walk or transfer to a bus.

  • the blue line is probably the best way to go. it would be at least $30 for a cab from o'hare.  i'm not sure where  your hotel is, though.

i would avoid navy pier, because it's not really that exciting IMO and it is kind of just and overpriced, crowded tourist trap.

the shedd aquarium is great, as is the art institute. all of the suggestions above are great too.  if the weather is good, it's always nice to just walk along the lakefront from the museums to millennium park.  lincoln park zoo is also pretty good and it's free.

as for restaurants - i'm a vegetarian too and there are tons of veggie friendly restaurant.  the Chicago Diner is near Wrigley Field and it's all veggie.

Green Zebra is amazing!!!  BUT, expect to spend at least a good $40 per person.  It can be hard to get reservations on a weekend, so you may want to make reservations now if you are interested in going there.  I think you can see the menu on their website. -- www.greenzebrachicago.com.

There's a bunch of other good veggie -friendly places too, like Earwax and the Handlebar Grill in Wicker Park. Bite Cafe in the Urkrainian Village.  There's a Costa Rican place called Irazu in Bucktown that's awesome.  There's a vegetarian sould food restaurant called Soul Veg, but it's way on the south side so that might be a pain to get to.

There are tons of Indian places on Devon Avenue, but it's pretty far north. You will want to take a cab up there.  Udupi Palace and Mysore Woodlands are both vegetarian Indian restaurants up there.  I also here that Baba Palace is really good. It's in the gold coast somewhere.

Good brunch spots -- Orange, Bongo Room, Ann Sather, Bite... many more.

HTH. Have fun in Chicago. Hopefully you'll have nice weather.
