help needed - gift for co-worker

The wife of a co-worker, with whom I am friends, just had a baby.  Should I get them a gift, or is it unnecessary?  (We didn't have a shower at work).

Since you're friends, I would totally give a gift. Doesn't have to be huge, but something to say CONGRATS!

Such an exciting time for them, I'm sure.

I think it would be a nice gesture. When I was pg my mothers coworkers and my FIs coworkers sent gifts even though they were not invited to the shower. I though it was nice of them.

I don't think you have to, but it wouldn't hurt.  I always get baby gifts simply because I love shopping for baby stuff!   Definitely check out Target -- they have the cutest stuff for really low prices.

I would go ahead and give a gift. Whenever there is a baby, the 1st place I check is the Target as it is fairly common to do a baby registry there. Definitely doesn't have to be expensive, even something as small as a teething ring lets your friend know you care.

Another fun thing to do is put together a "don't forget to take care of yourself!" gift basket for the new mom. I did that before and it wasn't as expensive as you might think, maybe around $20. I got a basket, Glamour magazine, bubble bath, chocolates, and milano cookies.

I would send a gift. My co worker and his wife had a baby a few months ago, and even though I did not know his wife (finally met her after she had the baby) I still sent them a gift when she delivered. It doesn't have to be big, just something to say congrats!

Thanks, ladies, for the advice.  I just didn't want to come off weird to too much, especially since I don't know his wife personally.
