In response to the Whole Foods post, someone mentioned Stanleys. I was just wondering if you are successful everytime you go there. Several of my friends raved about Stanleys so I went once last summer and was disappointed. The fruit looked awful to me. I bought a few things and then had to go to Jewel for the rest. The fruit actually looked better and was cheaper at Jewel. Maybe it was just an off day because I have never heard anything bad about Stanleys.
Re: Stanleys
Stanleys offers some very low prices... but there's a catch. A lot of the produce they have are just about ready to go bad. So if you shop there, its best to use the produce the same day. This is not the place to shop if you're looking for produce to have on hand for a few days.
I have started to track some of the prices and they are better than the Dominicks that I go to. The deals really are in the sales but if you get some real "sale sale" item plan to use it that day.
The apples & bagged salad we have bought lasts just as long as the items that I have bought at Dominics.
Usually we get apples, oranges, grapefruits, carrots, potatoes, onions, and garlic. Their bananas never look that appealing to me for some reason.
Most of it seems to stay good about as long as anywhere else I shop, but we usually use it all within a week. The organic stuff I get there always goes bad faster, but I think the same usually applies with organic produce from anywhere.
Also, keep in mind that organic produce doesn't always look as good because they can't use conventional pesticides.
You should check out the farmer's markets if you in the city, too. They have a bunch of them downtown during the summer and you can get really fresh stuff for good prices.
