Stanleys

In response to the Whole Foods post, someone mentioned Stanleys.  I was just wondering if you are successful everytime you go there.  Several of my friends raved about Stanleys so I went once last summer and was disappointed.  The fruit looked awful to me.  I bought a few things and then had to go to Jewel for the rest.  The fruit actually looked better and was cheaper at Jewel.  Maybe it was just an off day because I have never heard anything bad about Stanleys.

Re: Stanleys

  • DH does the shopping there- not sure if he just gets the fresh stuff or what- because everything he gets is really good. Maybe try it once more and see if you like it better. I think the good deals are the specials- so if you are flexible, you can get them really cheap.
  • I did go with a specific goal in mind since I was trying to make a fruit salad for a BBQ with the neighbors in my development.  I will have to go back and give it another try.  Since the parking lot always seems very crowded, it seems like I was just there on a bad day.
  • Stanleys offers some very low prices... but there's a catch. A lot of the produce they have are just about ready to go bad. So if you shop there, its best to use the produce the same day. This is not the place to shop if you're looking for produce to have on hand for a few days.

  • I have recently started shopping there.  Overall I am very pleased.  I have had 1 thing that I bought that was bad and it was a small seedless watermelon.  It wasn't a huge loss.

I have started to track some of the prices and they are better than the Dominicks that I go to.  The deals really are in the sales but if you get some real "sale sale" item plan to use it that day.

The apples & bagged salad we have bought lasts just as long as the items that I have bought at Dominics.
  • They don't always have everything I'm looking for. I think it depends on what's in season and what they get a good deal on.  It can be hit or miss sometimes.

Usually we get apples, oranges, grapefruits, carrots, potatoes, onions, and garlic. Their bananas never look that appealing to me for some reason.

Most of it seems to stay good about as long as anywhere else I shop, but we usually use it all within a week.  The organic stuff I get there always goes bad faster, but I think the same usually applies with organic produce from anywhere.

Also, keep in mind that organic produce doesn't always look as good because they can't use conventional pesticides.

You should check out the farmer's markets if you in the city, too.  They have a bunch of them downtown during the summer and you can get really fresh stuff for good prices.

  • I have been meaning to go to a farmer's market  for a long time, but never make it.  I grew up going every Saturday with my mom and it was great.  I sometimes take the easy way out and have her get me stuff on the weekends when I see her.  The produce is always great and usually the prices cannot be beat.  I also think it is a fun experience buying directly from the farmers since they obviously love what they do.
  • There were some great alternatives this winter for regular farmer's market produce shoppers. St. Ben's had a monthly market with alot of great stuff! I wish I had gotten there every time this winter, but was only able to get there twice. We have a great one here in the market season, in Lincoln Square on Tuesdays. When I can't get what I want there, I shop at Market Place in Skokie. They have THE BEST selection of produce for excellent prices. Sadly, because we're trying to cut down on mileage on our leased car and gas is so crazy, I send DH with a list as it is on his way home from work. I love that place. Great prices, fresh produce and meats and wonderful ethnic delights, and all the check out girls are lovely Greek gals. I loved going on Sundays best, they play great Greek music and you just sort of dance through the store.
  • Like others have said, Stanley's is good for same day or next day shopping, but you have to go there often and it's somewhat out of the way. I've been thinking of joining a CSA this year - has anyone had luck with Genesis Growers? http://www.genesis-growers.com
