Moving to Richmond/Petersburg/Hopewell Area
Hi i'm in the military and am getting stationed at Ft. Lee. Do you guys know what areas are good to live in and what areas should be avoided? Also do you have any apartment recs? Or know of any companies that rent houses?

Re: Moving to Richmond/Petersburg/Hopewell Area
I was at Ft. Lee for a couple weeks for class and from what I saw driving around, I wouldn't suggest Colonial Heights or Petersburg. Possibly Hopewell or even head NW more toward the downtown area into Chester. A lot of people seemed to find Chester nice that were staying in that area.

Hey, another west ender here I'm in Short Pump
I second the Chester area. It is more of a surburb area on the "Southside". Petersburg/Colonial Heights can be sketchy in spots and you probably don't want to live in the West End because that would be a drive to Ft. Lee.
Richmond is divided into many "areas", but you will commonly here people talk about the Southside (south of the River) vs. the West End, East End (can be sketchy), etc. Then there is downtown, the Fan, and other areas. Most of the southside including Chester is pretty nice. The suburban areas of Richmond are in general, nice, safe areas. Just like any city, there are "bad" areas and sides of town that you just don't go to. There has been a lot of cleanup in Richmond over the past years.
Well what are you looking for.. more urban, rural? How far are you willing to drive.
I drive from the West End to Ironbridge Rd in Chesterfield everyday for work, but this is already 45 mins via 288 so to Fort Lee (which is farther) would not be an option really.
Fort Lee is close so very run down areas, but some of these areas do have there nice spots. Though if you drive a little you too could be in Chester or up 95 near Walthall (Ruffin Mill Rd exit) to the east there are very nice homes being built in Chesterfield. Also farther down River Road close to Chesdin Landing there are some nice homes.
I would check Craigslist.. that is how I really came to rent my house actually. So you may have some luck there.
Thanks ladies for all the advice. I think we will check out the Southside and Chester.
