moving to oldwestbury

My husband is most likely going to nycom med school in old westbury.  thus, we are looking for affordable apartments/ town houses in the area.  since we are from missouri, prices are a tid bit different here.  just some questions: where would be the most affordable and safe place to live that gives us direct access to old westbury?  What type of prices should we expect?  How is the transportation around old westbury?  also, i am an rd, dietitian.  are there any good places to look in the area?  any tips are really helpful!!  thanks everyone!

Re: moving to oldwestbury

  • Some towns that are relatively close are Mineola, Williston Park, Carle Place, Glen Cove and Hicksville.  As far as public transportation, it would be buses.  Here is the long island bus route website http://www.mta.info/libus/routes/routes.htm
Prices for apartments can really vary on Long Island.  I would say for a one bedroom it can run you anywhere from $700 to $1500 per month.  I think it really depends on whether you want to live in an apartment building or in an apartment in a house.  You could also try www.newsday.com and look at their real estate section for apartments to rent.  that will give you a better idea on prices.

  • jonscar, I see that you are a dietician. I am currently looking for one. I have PCOS, and I am trying to regulate it through diet- low carb, low sugar. I am not obese, but I could lose some weight. Anyway, when are you moving to LI? I live in Merrick, which is not too far from Old Westbury. Would you be interested in a new patient? :)

  • I would look into NYCOM housing, it would likely be cheaper than anything you could find privately.  otherwise look at glen cove, floral park and mineola (all of which would require a car - public transport on long island is not great - except for the LIRR)
