Visiting LI

Hey ladies, I am a Nor CA knottie and I just found out DH has a bussnes trip to LI at the end of Aug. and I get to go with! I am really excited. I have no idea where we are staying and since his boss  is paying for that I don't need any recomindations for hotels. But I would love to know about stuff to do! What parks or shows do you suggest also cheap eats would be great?!? Also I know the weather will be hot and humid but exatcly how hot and humid are we talking about? TIA.

Ariel

Re: Visiting LI

  • Do you know where on Long Island you'll be?  There are some historical things like Roosevelt's childhood house, and some museums.  Depending on which county (Nassau or Suffolk) you'll be in may determine where you would go.  If you're anywhere near Rockville Centre then there's a great, young downtown with some bars and great restaurants like Cabo (very fun) and Rigatoni, Etc. (one of my favorites for italian food).  Long Beach is also a young area with lots of bars and restaurants, though it may be out of your way depending on where you are.  Jones Beach is the big beach to go to.  There are some very different restaurants too.  In Garden City there's a restaurant called Waterzooi which is known for their buckets of mussels.  Very delicious.  If you're out in Suffolk you'd probably want to go to Port Jefferson for dinner - it's on the water and very cute and quaint.  I think the restuatant we tried there was called Pasta Pasta.  I'll ask DH for some more ideas.  He grew up here (I've only lived here a couple years and don't know it all yet).  :)
  • Also...this board tends to be dead (not sure why - I guess us Long Islanders get busy) so you may want to also post this on the Long Island board for the Knot.  Also, go to LIFamilies.com and then go the the Chat section.  There are always people on those boards.
  • It depends on where you'll be staying. If you'll be far enough east in Suffolk then you should try the Hampton's for beaches and the Riverhead outlets. There's also a fun waterpark, Splish Splash. If you're going to be in Nassau then you'll definitely need to hit up the city, obviously millions of things to do there! Also, Northport Village is a beautiful, quaint village on the water. It's a nice village for walking around and going to dinner. So is Huntington Village (which is larger than Northport). Both are in Suffolk on the North Shore.

As far as weather, it really depends, so far it has been pretty mild here, but in August it's typically in the 90's and very humid.

Are you looking to go to a show in the city? If you are, you can sign up for a free membership at Playbill.com and they'll send you e-mails about discounted tickets. There are so many good shows on broadway! You can also try off-broadway shows as they tend to be a little cheaper and are still very entertaining.

Let us know what part of LI you'll be staying and we can give you more specific info!

  • As the other posters said, it really depends on where you will be, nassau or suffolk counties.  In Suffolk there are some towns that have really nice villages with boutique kind of shops that you can walk through, like Huntington, Sayville and Babylon.  Jones Beach is a very large beach to go to, you can go mini golfing there and there is a restaurant, I think it is the Boardwalk Restaurant.  You can check www.jonesbeach.com to see what concerts are playing at the "stadium" I used to work there and it is a great place to see a show, very small and right on the water.  If you have the time the Hamptons and Montauk is a great drive.  Another poster said that Long Beach was great, which it is.  So many bars and restaurants in the West End, however, parking is not so easy there.  YOu can also spend the day there at the beach.  Definitely try to get into the city to see a show.
As far as the weather, since you are coming up here at the end of August, the weather could be either pretty hot and humid or starting to cool off a little.  Usually by Labor Day it starts getting cooler.
  • And if you do make it to the wonderful places these ladies suggested--like Huntington and/or Northport (which is where I'm from) you should eat at The Shack!  It's on the road that connects both villages (well, kind of) 25A and its really just a shack on the side of the road, it would be on the right if you are going from Huntington to Npt, or on the left from the opposite direction.  Not exactly "cheap" (I think that's what pizza places are for--cheap eats) but it's "fun" fare and you'll learn a lot about LI from your meal there!
