Probably relocating to LI, some advice needed!

My husband is being transferred to Long Island City (Queens) for work.  We now live in upstate NY and it is just too far of a commute from here.  We are looking into relocating into Nassau county, possibly Hicksville.  It seems as though the train from here to Jamaica is a direct, express line.  Is this true?  Any other towns that would be an easy commute by train?  He's hoping to make it in in an hour or less.  Also, how long would it take by car on a typical day?  An hour? We are trying to be in a one hour radius (with traffic).  I would take any recs of other towns to look into.

One more question:  I will need to search for a new job as well.  I am a physical therapist.  Would love names of good hospitals, practices, etc in Nassau county. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Probably relocating to LI, some advice needed!

  • Hi, Good luck with your move!  We are out in Suffolk, so idk too much about the commute question.  I would think it would be within an hour drive because I can easily drive to Jamaica from here in less than an hour (without traffic).  The train would probably still be your best bet.

I know that LI Jewish is great and there is a hospital in Manhassett that I heard was good.

No one really posts on this board, I'm not really sure why, the knot LI board is always going, you may want to post there, the girls are really nice and I'm sure they would be happy to help you out.

  • Hi,

First, good luck with your move. Most train lines have a stop in Jamaica.  There are plenty of towns in Nassau that are really nice and not terribly far from Queens.  Rockville Centre, Long Beach, Oceanside, Island Park, which are all southwest nassau county.  Hicksville, Plainview, Farmingdale, Seaford are all a little bit further east.  You can go to www.newsday.com and they have an explore long island section and information about towns.  By car, with traffic I would say most of the towns I mentioned would be about an hour from LIC.

As far as hospitals there are tons, Long Island Jewish Hospital, North Shore University Hospital at Manhasset, South Nassau in Oceanside.

  • You should also try to look in Plainview & Sysosett.  Those neighborhoods are really nice and they also have good school districts.  Regarding a job for you, I currently work as a International Nurse Recruiter at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, NY.  I think we may have Physical Therapist positions available, but I think they are both PT.  One position is in the hospital and one is in one of our home care facilities.  You can go on our website at www.Southnassau.org and fill out an application and submit your resume.  I wish you the best of luck with your move and finding a job.  Good Luck!!!

  • Thanks for all the help... We found out we are definitely moving. We have checked into some of the towns mentioned.  They look good.  I think we will rent first since we dont know much about the area but we are trying to get into a town where you can get a 'starter home' for $400, 000 or less.

As far as the job for me goes, thanks for the advice.  We arent actually moving until 9-12 months from now, so I will check back a little closer to then to see what types of openings there are.

  • Hi Ali
I live in East Meadow. We are smack dab in the middle of Hicksville trian adn Bellmore. Hicksville is hub and have many trains. Hicksville train services many areas. We can live locally in hicksville, levittown, plainview, woodbury.. Plainview and Woodbury are pricey. No homes less than 450,000. Hicksville is affordaable and Levittown. East meadow is close by and very nice, but you can not park at Hicksville train station becausei t is not part of town of oysterbay. Bellmore train station you dont need special parking permits. If you have any questions you can email me at smseltz80@aol.com. Good luck to you!!

  • I know the Hicksville train is a popular line.  There are also very nice areas to live (Rockville Centre, East Rockaway, Oceanside) near the Rockville Centre and Eadt Rockaway train stations.  I don't know what your price range is for a house, cuz it's not cheap there.  Then again, nowhere in Nassau seems to be cheap anymore.  Though some slightly more affordable areas are East Meadow and Wantagh (but in the Levittown school distrcit - that's where we are).

As for jobs...  I wouldn't recommend LIJ.  My SIL is a nurse and used to work there and said it was very unsanitary.  Cockroaches in the operating room.  Yuck!  But she said Winthrop and Manhassett are great hospitals.  Mercy hospital is in Rockville Centre and she said that it's not the best, but it's ok and they're very friendly there.
