Nice Places to Live in LI

I saw in your bio that you are going to Hofstra.  Definitely look at towns like Merrick, Bellmore, Long Beach, Garden City - which is on the pricier side.  Also, Rockville Center, Baldwin, Island Park, Oceanside.  These are mostly on the South Shore of Long Island and all are pretty close, within 20 minutes of Hofstra.  I saw on www.newsday.com (local paper) that they have a new section on the towns, so that may be some help.

I hope that helped. Good Luck

Re: Nice Places to Live in LI

  • Thank you, that does help. There are SO many places to live here and it is hard to sort through all of them.  I am checking out the Newsday thing right now:)
  • Rockville Centre and Long Beach are both decently priced with lots of young people, bars, restaurants, etc.  Oceanside is also good.  We used to live in an apt complex that was very affordable right behind the East Rockaway train station.  My friend now has an apt. there and is moving out in a couple weeks, so there'll be at least one vacancy.
  • If you want quiet move to the North Shore. I currently live in a great rental community in Glen Cove. I can get you info if you would like. I currently live in a two bedroom which I am moving out off within a month or so. The building has a gym, pool and gated parking garage. We have a patio with a great view of the pool and courtyard. Let me know if you want any info.
  • Would that be the Avalon?? One of my best friends lives there and it sounds similar.  If not, I would love some info. We are unfortunetly locked into our lease for another year (it was a 2 year lease). But I am gathering info now so I will be prepared when it comes time to find a place.  Thank you!
  • Hey Laura,

I currently live in Long Beach...we loooove it down here! You can relax on the board walk, go onto the beach, or head over "the bridge" on the weekends to get a drink at one of the bars (Montego Bay, Paddy McGees, Coyote Grill). Its def a place to meet people and start connections on long island....I know someone who moved here last year from upstate and now would never leave and has a huge network of friends. You have to look around for lower priced apartments, but im sure people also advertise for "house sharing". If you want "less crowded" then the West End of LB is not the place to live..try staying central in LB. Its not a "less crowded" place, but its def a relaxed part of long island where you are sure to meet people. Now that the weather is warm, come down and check out the area :) Good luck on your search!

  • That sounds so appealing. I think I know where the area is b/c my hubby and I went to Lido beach a bunch of times.  I will def check it out:) I appreciate all the input, I am going to feel really confident when looking for a new place!
  • Hey Laura,

If you need help or info on finding a resonable and comfortable place to live you can e-mail me.  I am a realtor and can answer any questions you may have with no obligations.   Yes the Avalon Apartments are beautiful and they are located in different towns.

  • That is so nice of you! I would love some advice from someone who really knows the market:)  I don't want to live in a big apt complex again and would LOVE a townhouse, but I don't see many, if any, around my area. I just don't like having so many neighbors.

Also, Iam slowly learning about the nice areas that are more affordable like oceanside or roslyn, but I still don't know what would be best for my husband and I. We aren't ready to buy a house, but I would like more privacy than an apartment can offer...

we still have a lease until next May, but I want to be ready and know what I am doing:)

    Any thoughts/advice? Much appreciated!!!
(I wasn't sure how to get your e-mail address, but you can answer me at mine if you prefer laura.eckman@gmail.com)

  • I live in Franklin Square and I LOVE it.  DH works in Manhattan and the commute is not too bad.  All major highways are easily accessible and anything you need as far as shopping is within walking distance.  The people are generally nice and home prices start at about 425K for a cape.  People take pride in their homes and keep them in good shape.  The schools are very good and alot of twenty somethings are moving in.  We have alot of friends who grew up one town over in Floral Park who want to stay on LI but just could not afford the taxes and homes prices in FP.  They moved one town over to FS and love it.  My taxes are about $6500/yr which is not terrible for LI.

    Good luck!
