If you're looking for a SLR camera then I would go with a Canon. I have to admit that I'm biased toward them, but that's what I own and I love it. If you are a beginner Nikon is really user friendly, but my 61 year old dad uses Canon, so I don't know.
Hopefully that helps a little!
I loooooooove my point and shoot Canon... it was $199 at Target and takes AMAZING pictures. The software to transfer to your computer is fabulous, too. I actually still use it with my new Nikon. Love it.
I also have a Nikon D70s that takes really great pictures, too, but I'm still figuring out how it works.
