from KY--visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes
I looked at the available Michigan boards and it seems that Lansing is the closet to Sleeping Bear Dunes.
My DH and I are planning to visit at the end of July and I was wondering if anyone has camped at Sleeping Bear? I want to be as close to a beach as possible. Any suggestions? I've been looking at Platte River Campground (specifically b/c it seems to be the only one w/showers).
Also, is there any nearby "attractions" that you'd recommend? I want to visit a winery and I've heard that Glen Harbor is a cute town?????
Any opinions/suggestions/help you can give will be much appreciated!
Thanks!!
Re: from KY--visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes
There are tons of wineries. If you do a search of tourism of grand traverse or leelanau, you can find more info on wine tours. My favorites are Mawby (all sparkiling wine) and black star farms.
Haven't been to the dunes in years, so not sure as to the whole campground thing. Definitely get a reservation soon though.....norhtern michigan campgrounds tend to fill up fast!
Platte River Campground is my absolute favorite campground of all time. It's SO nice and the bathrooms are immaculate. Large sites, beautiful scenery--you will love it. However, unless you can get a reservation (hard to do in prime July), sites are very hard to get. You have to start waiting in line at like 5-6am the day you want to check in.
The town is actually Glen Arbor and it is a cute little tourist town. The whole Leelanau Peninsula is great. For more info on the area, check out: www.leelanau.com Tons of links there.
For winery information, check out: www.lpwines.com The wineries are more in the Suttons Bay area which is on the east side of the peninsula.
If you really want to explore the Dunes, stop at the Visitor Center in Empire. They've got all the trail maps and you can buy your park pass there.
