Vacation spots in Northern MI?

We want to go on a long weekend vacation this summer w/ my friend and her dh. I'm not familiar w/ Northern MI at all, I've heard that Saugatuck (sp?) and surrounding areas are beautiful w/ lots to do. We just want something where we can maybe bring our kayaks and do outdoorsy stuff without breaking the bank. Any suggestions? TIA :)

Re: Vacation spots in Northern MI?

  • Are you campers?  There are many state parks that have access to hiking, kayaking, biking, etc.

  • Hi JMMac -

I actually lived in Saugatuck/South Haven for a summer to do an internship and it is absolutely beautiful. It on the "West Coast" of Michigan and is just the right size for a tourist town. Not to big and not to small. They have jetski rentals and tons of shops and restaurants to go to. Very beautiful but can be a pricey town if you don't take the time to bargain hunt. HTH!
  • We went to Michigan Aventures last year and stayed in a little bed and breakfast about 20 min from the park. It was very nice
  • I would recommend going further north to the Leelanau/Traverse City area.  Sleeping Bear Dunes is near this area, and the kayaking/canoeing around there is great.  Plus, there are great wineries all along the peninsulas where you can taste wine...free :)

Wonderful camping, I might add.  DH and I camp up there every summer.
  • Thanks so much ladies, I appreciate your help :)
  • Depending on how adventerous you are and how far you want to travel, Sylvania Wilderness Area in Watersmeet, MI has beautiful swimming, canoeing, and kayaking areas.
  • I vote Ludington/Pentwater area. Beautiful beaches, afforable places to stay (for the most part) and lots of little lakes to kayak at if the big lake is wavy (mornings are perfect for Lake MI kayaking). It's about 2.5 -3 hours from Lansing.

(of course, it's my hometown so I'm partial)
  • Hello I live in Charlevoix Mi its right on Lake Michigan.  This is a great Vacation spot in the summer months.  Lots of outdoor events to enjoy.  We are only an hour away from Mackinac Island and that is a great place also.  It is a little bit more expensive but a very unique place to visit.  Its a great place to go to get away from a busy life style since there are no cars only wallking, bike riding, horse and buggy.
