Daycare

Any suggestions on area daycares?  Which ones are bad/good?  DH is creeped out by the idea of people who do it out of their homes, and would prefer a center.
I am still hoping to win the lotto and be able to be a stay at home mom:)

Re: Daycare

  • Hey there... Where do you live/work?? basically where are you looking?
I understand the idea of being creaped out about in peoples homes.. but as long as they are licenced, IMO they are just the same as a center... my aunt and SIL run in home day cares and they have to go through sooooo much in order to stay licenced, its crazy... My aunt has ran her in home for over 30 years. Anyways... I can get you their infromation if you want.. aunt is in colonial village/lansing and sil is in P-ville...
Otherwise for centers I dont know much because my work has there own so thats all I hear about!Good luck!
  • How much are you paying? ;o) My dream is to find a really nice family to be able to stay with their kids until they are all in school. Other than that, I'm no help. I'm not in Lansing. I would go visit centers and look at them closely. Also, see if you can talk to the people that work there. For instance, some centers are really nice but only pay their workers minimum wage. No offense, but I wouldn't want someone making minimum wage taking care of my children.

  • EC3 is a nice center, they are naeyc accredited (national association for the education of young children) which is good, and teachers are educated/experienced. I'm not really too familiar with many other centers. If I were you I might just drop by a few and check them out (maybe even unannounced so that they aren't expecting/"preparing" for you - they should give you a tour on the spot.) Good luck! :)
  • I'm not sure what area of Lansing you're hoping to find daycare in, but you could check with First Church of the Nazarene. It's on the west side of town on Elmwood, near the Meijer on Saginaw. I've heard great things about them but haven't called myself as I think it's out of our price range (we're still looking for a daycare provider). 517-321-4676

Also, have you heard of the Office for Young Children? Once you've found a provider you might be interested in, you can look them up online to see if they've had any violations against them. You can also call free of charge and they will provide you with a referral list of providers to call. They will only give referrals, not recommendations. 517-887-4319
  • Thanks ladies!  I am looking on the east side of lansing and have fridays off so am thinking of starting to check out some places in a month or so on my days off:)

  • I am in the same boat as you right now, trying to get daycare figured out. What I have found to be helpful is going on to the State of MI's website. I just search on the website for childcare licenses and you can search any childcare providers license and see if they have had any complaints or violations against them. It has been an eye opener for me. Good Luck!
