Charleston Nesties-need some help please

DH and I are thinking of visiting Charleston for the first time, probably in September. Any tips on things to see/do and places to stay and eat. Any advice would be great! Thank you!

Re: Charleston Nesties-need some help please

  • Oh, I see a few posts about Charleston further down the page. I'll check those out but any other/new advice is appreciated, too. : )
  • September is typically still pretty hot and sticky, so you can always frequent the beach. We have lots of plantations. Magnolia Gardens, Middleton Place, Boone Hall.

The new bridge (formerly the Cooper River Bridge) has a walking path and you can view the Charleston area, Yorktowne (located at Patriot's Point) from there.
There is always The Battery, White Point Gardens, Citadel, Marion Square - I think they do outdoor movies thru out the summer during the weekends there.

We have a lot of churchs (hence the Holy City nickname) if you like to look at the differnent architectural styles, etc.

We have a ton of restuarants not sure what you like specifically. If you like steak and potatoes like me The Oak Steakhouse, or Grill 225 nice (anniversary type occasion), if you  like something a little more casual Italian I like Bocci's. There is so much food in this town, it should be illegal, if you want to ask specific types I could probably better answer. Just page me here.

Good Luck and I hope you enjoy your trip.

  • Our favorite restaurants downtown are Poogan's Porch (awesome brunch, also serves lunch and dinner, has the best buscuits in Charleston), 82 Queen, Jestine's Kitchen, and the Boathouse (also has another location on Isle of Palms, which we like better since you can see the water and often the dolphins swimming by). Hymanns is hit or miss - if it is crowded your food might arrive cold. But on a slow day they have excellent fresh fish. Fleet Landing also has a nice atmosphere. I've heard good things about McCrady's but haven't made it there yet.  If you're in the mood for pizza, Giuseppi's in Mt. Pleasant is the best around. Out on the islands there are cute bars - Windjammer and a few others on Ocean Blvd. on Isle of Palms, and Poe's on Sullivan's which has great burgers and fish tacos.  Station 22 is an awesome restaurant on Sullivan's which, in my opinion has the best crab cakes around, and has to die for coconut cake.  I've never stayed anywhere but on IOP in a beach rental, which you can find info about at islandrealty.com.  There are nice B&Bs downtown though, and Charleston Place hotel is gorgeous. You can always take the boat ride to Ft. Sumter, tour the USS Yorktowne, tour the plantations (Magnolia is probably the best).  Carriage rides and ghost tours are fun - we've done several (caution: use bug spray if you go in the evening). Hit the Market for some souvenir shopping. Isle of Palms has parking at the County Park for $7 all day if you want to go to the beach.  Cypress Gardens towards Moncks Corner is often overlooked, but is beauiful. Hilton Head and Savannah are only an hour and a half or so away if you want to do a day trip there.  Page me if you need anything or have other questions.  Hope that helps!
