Thanks for all the great advice. DH and I just got back from our weekend in SC. We went to see the Hunley, did a Dark Side of Charleston tour, went to Ft Sumter, and had dinner at Hanks. This was by far one of the best dinners ever! (I laughed at the people waiting in the cold to eat at Hymans) DJ loved it so much that he wants to go again, this summer! We decided against a plantation since there is nothing in bloom right now. We didn't have time for a carriage tour so that is first on our list for the next trip. BTW...if you live close to a Maurice's BBQ you have to go get some Carolina Hash. We stoped at the one in Santee on our way home from Florence. It was sooooo good.
Thanks again!
Re: Thanks Charleston Ladies
Just a warning, Charleston in the summer is sweltering and unpleasant. Best advice is to go no later than May. It starts getting cooler again around September. And Maurice's BBQ is actually one of our worst BBQ restaurants.
What BBQ is better? For me the hash was pretty darn good considering that I've never had it before. We only have red sauce BBQ in our area so we thought it was good for something different.
There is a BBQ place in Holly Hill not far from Santee that is awesome. It was featured on Anthony Bourdain: No Reservastions. I can't remember the name but if you stop for gas and ask, everyone knows it. The only other BBQ that I would say is the best is Hudson Brothers BBQ in Lexington SC. They have three different sauces and you can get anything from brisket ( I highly recommend the brisket) to chicken. It's all fresh and made daily. I have never had BBQ to literally melt in my mouth like Hudson Brothers, not even in Kansas City.
Maurice's has become too commercial. Not to mention by buying from Maurice's you are support his very bigoted notions. There is no southern charm in what Maurice Bessinger represents in SC.
it's totally hard to find and only open on Fridays and Saturdays and only in the summer .... we tried to go once in August and it was closed for vacation (go figure!) but I've heard great things
