Should I move to SC?

DH and I currently live north of Boston right on the ocean. We love it here and have lived her our whole lives. All our family live here too.

Unfortunatly MA is very expensive. Our brand new condo (one bed/one bath) was $215k. We make over $100k a year and have no other dept besides mortgage and student loans.

Would SC be a better place to move? Could we still make $100k (I'm in PR, DH is an environmental engineer who is gettig his MBA in finance.)
And if so, are there any places near the water (like literally cities that boarder the ocean) with historical homes, small town feel, not a place where you have to drive on a highway to get everywhere, a place where you can walk downtown.
I'm not sure this even exists, but that's my I'm asking! Thanks for any advice you have.

Re: Should I move to SC?

  • Charleston fits most of your critieria: ocean front, walk downtown, historic homes, rare to ever need to get on a highway to go anywhere....hwy 17 does not count because it is just the main road thru town :), the cost of living here is much lower than where you would be moving from..we were in a similar situation from were we moved. As far as jobs go your best bet is going to be looking and researching what is available. The jobs in this town are based off of tourism, medical and goverment. Charleston is one of the top ten places in the nation to visit but still maintains its great historical charm without all the nasty touristy stuff. Charleston is also the #2 place in the nation to get married so the there is quite a bit of job potential for you in the PR department. Your DH should look into civilian jobs with the goverment since quite a few people do this here.

    good luck.

  • I live in Charleston (right on ocean) and I have a PR degree.  I couldn't find a job in it, but I stopped looking years ago.  Environmental engineering would be easier I would think.  Money goes farther down here, but keep in mind you get paid less.  There's property taxes on houses/cars and a state income tax.  If you want to live downtown, that will cost you some money here, unless you're willing to slum it with the college students.  Public transportation is almost nil, like most places in the South.  Downtown is beautiful and walkable, but if you live and work on opposite ends, you'd need to drive, especially with the humidity in the summer.

There are two main highways that link the suburbs together, but neither of them is Boston highway crazy.

If the planets aligned and you found jobs there, it sounds like Beaufort (pronounced Byoo-fert) is what you're looking for.  It's small-town, has a beautiful historic district, and is less expensive than larger Charleston.  It's on the coast and close to Hilton Head and about 45 minutes-1 hour from Charleston.  You might also want to check out Savannah, GA.  On the coast, bigger than Beaufort, and affordable.

I love the Boston area - I would see if you could make it work before moving.  My inlaws live there and it took them a few years to move up into the house they dreamed of.  It's hard moving to a place where you don't know anyone and family is far away.
  • My parents live in NH and I moved down to charleston a few years ago for school and met my husband and we decided to stay here... I love both boston and charleston, but they are a bit different.. charleston is a smaller city... still packed with things to do and lots in the surrounding areas, but it is a little slower than boston... There are definiatly prently of historic houses on the water that is definialy affordable in your price range... If I were you I would take a vacation down here are see if it fits your picture perfect place then look at the job market and see if it will fit with what you do... Charleston is a great city, but I have heard the job market is very small and specific... so do some research.. if you can come down savannah isnt that far and you can take a day drive down that way to see if that fits your needs too... they are all beautiful... hope that helps!!!
  • Don't move here.  We hate yankees.  Kidding.

SC is famous for it's beaches and coastal cities.  Sounds like you are looking for a smaller city with hometown feel.  Bluffton, Beaufort, Kingstree, Edisto Island, Garden City all come to mind.

  • My only concern is thinking you will make the same salary as you do now. I moved from NJ in July and make half of what I did in NJ.  I know NJ pays a higher salary than any other state in the US but half is crazy!  Research average salaries before you move!
