Charleston ?

Greetings ladies! DH and I are thinking about a trip to Charleston in May. Originally, we wanted to stay at a B&B. Since we have a ton of HHonors points we thought it would be wise to use up some on this trip. However, the only hotel in Charleston that accepts HHonor would be the Doubletree (Historic). Is the hotel in a nice area to stay? What's nearby?

As fans of Trademark, we wanted to go to the restaurant Crab Shack (I think) they flipped on the show. When I started researching it there appears to be quite a few in the area. Does anyone know where the one featured on the show is located?

Any must see/do/eat places?

Thank you!

Re: Charleston ?

  • The Doubletree is right in the middle of everything. Excellent location and within walking distance to most everything you will want to go do and see. Crab Shack is ok..not my favorite. Right next door to the Doubletree is a restaurant called Hank's and it is a seafood restaurant and excellent! Also, Hominy Grill is a great place to eat breakfast or brunch (downtown, but not walking distance) Make reservations, though at Hank's. You will of course go to the market (which will be right in front of your hotel). Take a carriage tour, go to the battery, take a tour of the Edmunston Alston House on the battery, go to Fort Sumter, if you rent a car or bring one go to one of the plantation houses..they are worth going. Especially Middleton Place and Drayton Hall. You will have so much fun!

  • The Doubletree is in the middle of everything! It's very nice. You name it and it's nearby. I don't know which Crab Shack was flipped, so I can't help you there. But you will be in walking distance to the downtown location. However, there are many other better seafood restaurants near Doubletree.

All of these suggestions are in walking distance:
See: Waterfront Park, Straw Market, Rooftop Bar on top of Market Pavillion Hotel
Eat: Hanks (Seafood), ...ya know what, it's all so good, I can't even begin to give you my favs, you'll pass them all! East Bay Street has the better upscale atmospheres.

I can send you links if you'd like...Amy

  • it was the Charleston Crab House that was flipped. it is about five minutes from downtown just on James Island on the corner of Folly and Maybank Hwy. You cant miss it because the crab is upside down.

as the pp's have said the Doubletree is right in the middle of all the downtown action. with so many places to eat and see planning ahead is pretty important or you will get sucked into the super toursity stuff very easily. but defentilty do a carriage ride...it is the one "touristy thing" that is super fun.
  • I'm sorry one last question. A spot at the Embassey Suites-Citadel opened up. Would you stay there vs Doubletree? It appears a little further away from everything downtown.
  • Doubletree. ES is okay and close to other attractions, but I still think Doubletree is the place you want to be, I feel more safe at the area around Doubletree vs. ES.
