I came to Chicago and loved it

Thanks all for your help. I loved Chicago and want to come back!

We took cab to Renaissance.  Good, easy.  Renaissance.  Nice, pretty, clean, sufficient room.  We looked over the corner of Wacker and ....the next street over. and could see part of the river.

that day we walked to navy Pier which is absolutely the suck in ned-of-winter months.  Nothing to do or see, kids everywhere, we wanted a drink and paid too much for them at Riva.  We left and went to Celtic Cross on Clark.  Nice time.  We went back , freshened up, and went to Old Towne and had drinks and cheer at Old towne Pub.  Cute place!  food looked good.  As it was pouring sideways and we wanted to try another hood, we went over towards Division and, because we were loaded stopped into Butch McSomethings and had nasty fried chicken in a smelly bar.  I did like the kitchsyness of the place.   Back to the hotel to pass out.

Sunday - snow sideways. Watched the runners.  We were hungry from having a shitt dinner the night before, had breakfast at the Emerald room around the corner - it was ok.   Snow was stopping, walked over to MIllennium Park, then cab to the Squarium. Nice place!  HOWEVER...every exhibit had "picture to come picture to come" posted...and the whales and sharks werem't there .   Very sad that I effed up in planning an architecture tour (the bus one was at 9:30 that morning).  taxi up to Rush for Downtown Dog.   great!

back to shower and then up to Signature for cocktails at Hancock Tower.   Excellent - esp during sunset!

taxi to wicker park (why the hell didn't we go there saturday?  i just did not plan this trip well, despite your help. I suck) and fell in love with it. And the Violet Hour. Let me ust say that if you are a fan at all of cocktails, please go there. It is awesome. I will expand more later.  Had fried cocktial onions and mini chicago dogs.  and a fancy dog with cashews. yes you heard me.  and the cocktails were GLORIOUS.  we wanted something more substantial for dinner, it was late, and sunday, so we got back over towards wacker and had a lobster roll at smith and wollensky's (ugh, i cannot believe we went to a chain).

we left the next day.

 thanks again!

Re: I came to Chicago and loved it

  • Sounds like you hit a few good spots (I love VH, too!), but I would definitely make some different suggestions for your next trip...most of the stuff downtown is overpriced and not that great (with some exceptions). I got burned at Smith & Wollenskys the last time (went with The Dude's parents, got the WORST service).

Too bad about the weather, too. Just means you have to come back...in June.

I TOLD you to get over to Wicker Park/ Bucktown for food and fun!  Sheesh, they never listen to me.  :)

Glad you had fun.  You need to return when the weather doesn't totally suck and when all the restaurants have outdoor seating.  Chicago is the best place in the world in the summer.
