SC Jobs...where are they?!

Hi Everyone,
New to the local board here. I've posted some on other boards but thought I'd say hello here. I just moved to SC when I got married in Sept. I was wondering, is it just me, or is it really hard to find a job here?! I have experience in the Special Needs/Education field and I can not find work. I've search all over. I've even looked into being a nanny for kids (both special needs or non-special needs), not much luck there either! Anyone else have problems finding work? Anyone in this field having problems as well?
Thanks.
Chrystal

Re: SC Jobs...where are they?!

  • Hi!  I really can't be of any help but I saw your reply to my post below.  Thanks. :)  I've been scouring job sites like crazy and have yet to have anything really pop out at me.  I'm looking forward to getting back to the states but am trying to prepare myself for the possibility of being unemployed for an extended period of time when we get there (ugh).  Good luck!

  • 1.  Where are you located in SC?
    2.  The job market in SC is not all that great.  In fact it is dismal.  I'm an admin and the last time I had to get a job, I was unemployed for 6 months.
    3.  I do have suggestions though.  Temp agencys are awesome getting work while you are looking for the best job for you.  Try AppleOne.com.  They have gotten me my last two jobs.  Always easy to work with and decent pay.  Also the salaries in SC are lower than then national norm.  ex: typical executive admin will make 35-45k in the rest of the world but in SC they make about 25-28k.  The cost of living is lower here though.
    4.  SC is mostly rural and improverish.  Most jobs are in the manufacturing sector.  And schools are paid for by the taxes the counties raise individually.  So there are many poor school districts in SC.
  • Well I too just moved here in October. I am a Physical Therapist who started in outpatient orthopedics and was looking for a move towards pediatrics. My husband and I moved to Greenville. PT jobs are pletiful everywhere so I didn't have a hard time finding employment, but it was hard to find the specific pediatric position. I ended up finding a job in Anderson (about a 45 minute commute). The reason I give you my long story is that I work closely with a lot of Special Needs aides and teachers (as I provide services at 5 of the elementary schools in Anderson). If you live close to Anderson and wouldn't mind giving me specifics about the job you are looking for I can certainly inquire around for you. HTH!

  • Honestly, it took me a year to find a full-time job in the field I was looking for.  Not for lack of sporadic interviews, but things would always get in the way and one major deterrent was my previous salary.  I agree with a pp about temping.  Several people at a part-time job I had started out with Appleone.

Have you looked at the state website for jobs www.sc.gov Good luck.

  • I live in York County, but teach in Chester County. Chester County schools offer MAJOR incentives for special needs teachers because, honestly, it's a tough area. Check Chester County out, if nothing else, it might give you an idea of what the schools are like around here for special needs teachers. HTH!

  • I haved lived here all my life, but I moved to Columbia during college and when I graduated, I looked for a job for almost 6 months. Luckily I have been employed for the past year.

Good luck with the job search!
  • Um, as far as I can tell, there aren't any jobs here.  I telecommute to my job from when I lived in CA because there was nothing here that I could do that paid nearly as well and that was in my field.

Where in SC are you? If you are in the Charleston area, a lot of nanny opportunities are posted on the college of charleston's site for students and alums if you can find someone to log on for you and print it out.  That's where we advertised for our nanny and there were tons of other nanny jobs posted.

  • UPDATE*

I found a job! :) It's not working with special needs children, but I still love it. I now work at a daycare with 1-2 year olds, and I've been enjoying it alot~ Plus, it's only a minute down the road from my house. I don't know why I didn't look into working at a daycare before.

Thanks for all the advice and posts.
