Trader Joes

What is trader joes? I heard one is replacing Wild Oats in Greenhills. What do they sell? I finally got to go to World Market at Nash West with DH and we are so in love! We have found all kinds of stuff we want to get.
Everyone talking about it seems to be from DC or NY or somwhere like that, but these stores are all new to me! We also went to DSW last weekend and I found shoes in my size!! (I wear a size 11, so thats saying something!)

Re: Trader Joes

  • the nest keeps eating my posts. Here are my favorite things about TJs as you walk in the store.

    1. fresh cut flowers cheap.
    2. amazing cheese selection. cheap
    3. prepared foods. very good fresh salsa and guacamole, wraps and salads
    4. dairy. organic milk and yogurt a lot cheaper than kroger
    5. coffee and tea, huge selection and cheaper (Fair Trade too).
    6. frozen foods. great frozen meals especially ethnic foods like indian, asian and mexican. Also great frozen desserts, fruits and meats/fish.
    7. good snack foods usually cheaper than whole foods for things like pirates booty.
    8. and most importantly wine. Not every TJs sells wine, but the one by us in Boston did and they had lots of good cheap wine. People say they want 2 buck chuck which is what TJs is known for, but it gives me a headache. That said, they did carry a lot of other good wines and it was easy for me to find a decent dinner wine for $7-8 plus nicer wines for special occassions.

Most importantly, they give balloons on the way out so my son expected one at every grocery store.

  • ps. I hear you on the shoes...if only norstroms would come. I used to sit down and ask the clerk to bring me whatever color/style I was looking for in a 9.5N... no one carries that size except Nordies it seems.
  • Wow, thanks for the description, I'm so excited for the opening.  however, I don't think wine will be allowed, TN state law.  Darn it, would have loved some new varieties of wine.

  • In regards to selling the wine, I heard they may try to get around that law by having a "separate" wine shop on the premises.  I guess places like Costco do stuff like that, where is has a separate door, etc. but is attached to the building.  It'll be interesting to see if that happens.

  • I heard that they are actually tryning to change that state law, they sell beer why not wine, and people do not tend to abuse that the same way they do liquor and beer.

    Thanks for the great info!

  • We had Cost Plus/World Market out in CA. It's a great store! Lots of great finds for the home.

Trader Joe's is great!!! Hopingforseptimus pretty much summed it up!!! I'd be interested to see the layout at the Wild Oats location, because usually the TJ's I've been to have been smaller in size.

I keep hearing that we'll be getting a Nordstrom here. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

And the wine issue in grocery stores - don't even get me started!! The laws for selling alcohol/wine are so strange here. I also recently just read that a bill to allow the sale of wine in grocery stores probably wouldn't be passed this year. 2009 is more likely.
