Visiting Chattanooga...need help

Hi,
My husband and I are driving to Chattanooga from Kansas this weekend for a friends wedding. We'll have a little down time while we're there and would like some recommendations on things to do/see.  We're really into scenery and my husband loves civil war info. I've looked into Lookout Mountain, but it looks very touristy to me.  Are there any other mountains that might not be as crowded and wouldn't charge $$ to hike?  Any ideas are appreciated.

Re: Visiting Chattanooga...need help

  • not hiking, but we love the aquarium. It is a very good aquarium and we do day trips from nashville frequently just to do the aquarium.
  • I'm also a big fan of the aquarium!  While you're in the downtown area, the Bluff View Art district is fabulous - there are little shops, galleries and restaruants all overlooking the river. There's also a really cool pedestrian bridge downtown that's worth a walk across. My favorite breakfast and lunch spots I've been to are Rembrandt's (Bluff View) and Mudpie (downtown), and 212 Market is delicious for dinner or wine or both.

H grew up in Chatty and he's taken me to an area called Soddy Daisy that's really pretty for wandering around and wading in the stream, and the Ocoee River is great, though it may be cold for rafting right now.

Have fun, Chatty is a very cool city!
  • Lookout Mountain should not be crowded....never is. Chattanooga is not a crowded town...unless you go to the mall on a Friday or Saturday night. :D They also do not charge you to hike. There are a lot of trails on Lookout Mountain.....that is pretty much the only one you can hike with public trails. Anywhere else & if you aren't good with directions you might get lost....plus a lot of it is private. Point Park is a must see for the civil war buff....there is a trail that goes down the side of the mountain there. It goes down by the Eagle's Nest (where people rappell & then Sunset Rock where people climb) Missionary Ridge is beautiful, but you can easily get on the wrong side of town if you don't know where you're going, but is very pretty. You might enjoy the downtown area around the Aquarium & Coolidge Park. There is a nice walking bridge called the Walnut Street Bridge. Frazier Avenue has lots of cute shops. The aquarium & IMAX are nice. There are also Ruby Falls & Rock City.
