Help for a Fellow Nestie ~ Memphis Hotels...

I'm over from the Indiana board to get some advice fro my fellow nesties...  I also cross posted on the travel board.

We (DH&I , BIL& his wife) are taking the ILs on a trip to Memphis (Graceland, Sun Studios, Memphis Zoo, Mud Island River Walk, Peabody ducks, Beall Street) for their 35th wedding anniversary. We would rather spend money on other things and not so much on lodging but we have two really nice cars that we'll be taking so we need to stay someplace that isn't too shady but still close to everything... any suggestions for area of town, etc? I have been looking at the Hampton Inn on the ARK side... is that close enough to stuff? nice area? We will have two cars during the day caravaning around and we are going on a Thurs - Monday... what about the cost of parking downtown? Thanks so much any advice is welcome!

Thank you again!

Re: Help for a Fellow Nestie ~ Memphis Hotels...

  • I travel to Memphis (from Nashville) for business about once a month & generally stay at a Hampton Inn in Cordova (which is on the east side of town). It's definitely a nicer Memphis suburb, and is maybe 15 minutes from downtown. I'm not sure about the Arkansas side. I would caution you to please be careful about where you stay & also where you park during the day. I had my car broken in to at 11AM on a Wednesday morning in a "decent" part of town. DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING IN YOUR CAR, PERIOD! Sorry if the tone of this message sounds a little negative. Memphis can be a really fun city, and there are definitely lots of things to do, just be careful.
  • The Peabody can be pricey, but they have a really nice parking garage and it is in the middle of everything downtown.

The Doubletree is about the same- a little cheaper than the Peabody though I think.

Don't know when you are planning to come- May is usually really busy though with the Beale Street Music Festival and the Memphis in May activities so you may want to book as soon as possible.

As for regular parking- I am a photographer and I shoot in downtown Memphis sometimes.  I ALWAYS park in a parking lot called "Parking Can Be Fun"- it is only $3 a day and I have never ever had any issues with break-ins and security (and I ususally am traveling with thousands of dollars worth of equipment).  To be safe though- put any valuables that must stay in the car in your trunk.  This parking lot is also in a great location downtown- Peabody is just a couple of blocks away.

Good luck and have a fun trip!

  • There's a Comfort Inn on Front Street that's a lot cheaper than the Peabody or The Maariott. The Doubletree is a nice hotel. Its higher than the Comfort Inn, but cheaper than the others I listed.

No matter where you stay, my advice is to take advantage of valet parking. Seriously. It's worth it to know that your car is in a safe area and you don't have to venture out into the parking garage yourself.

Most downtown parking is $3-$5. If you can take the trolly, and leave your car at the hotel, I reccomend it. (NOT the MIFA bus - DO NOT set foot on that thing!!)

Also, as someone mentioned before, if you are planning to go in May, you better book your room now. People book a year in advance for the month of May, and you will have a really hard time finding anything available.
