Paging amykevin

Amy,

I know that you know a lot about animals and was wondering if you could answer a question for me.  I recently moved and every since the move one of my cats has been congested and sneezing.  He seems to be acting fine other than that but I was wondering if he could be allergic to something in the new house.  Any ideas on how I can treat him?  I really don't want to have to take him to the vet because going outside scares him half to death.

Re: Paging amykevin

  • A lot of cats have allergies to dust mites. You might also want to try bathing him too. I would just clean everything really good! If it is allergies they will give him a shot of steroids which would last about a year. I always use that as a last resort since the steroids will make them eat more & gain weight, but it does stop the allergies. Try this first, and if it is not the dust mite problem than it might be something else, but it more than likely is. Dust mites are EVERYWHERE & are hard to get rid of sometimes.
  • Thanks, I didn't even think about dust mites since I had all the carpet replaced.  I will give him a bath tonight and see if that helps.
  • They can even be in the blinds curtains, pillows, etc.... I bought a Rainbow vacuum just for the purpose of getting rid of them all. I just recently got an old cat of mine back, and we are going through the same thing with the allergies...his get so bad that he will claw places on his skin. You might also try a medicated shampoo with Miconazole Nitrate in it.
