Memphis Qs

We are currently in FL and looking toward possible relocation.  DH says no way to Memphis (but the co. he works for has business there and its a few hours from my family).

Suggestions, input, etc. (good or bad).  Is the weather horribly cold?

TIA

Re: Memphis Qs

  • First, the weather is not cold here by any means..Maybe 15 days out of the whole year is it actually cold. For the most part it's humid, hot, and sticky!

Memphis can be both good and bad. There are good parts of Memphis and the parts you stay out of. This isn't the place where DH and I will be staying our whole lives but it does us for now. I would suggest looking at other areas such as the DeSoto County area to live in. It's about a 10 minute drive from Memphis and a little bit nicer with better schools.
  • Thank you.  And I would definately appreciate information on the suburbs or outer areas of Memphis for living.  I thought I read that Shelby County has a better school system.
  • I just moved away from Memphis, and it is the best thing I have ever done, except that my family is now far away.  In my opinion, there is nothing good about Memphis.  The leadership is terrible, the economy is poor, the crime is horrible, the schools (city and county) are some of the worst, I could go on and on, but I will not.  I grew up in the area my whole life and it has continually gotten worse.  When you get out do you want to have to worry about getting carjacked and them not only taking your car, but shooting you?  This not only happens in the bad areas, but they also target the nicer areas also.  The suburbs are not any better, because it is carrying the crime with it also.  Yes, it is extremely cheap to live there, but to me it is not worth it.  DH and I always knew that we wanted to get away from there and we would never raise a family there.  Luckily, we got a very good oppurtunity to move away and we could not be happier now!  I am sure this is not what you wanted to hear, but I am trying to be as honest as possible.
