I want to get your input about France. DH and I are planning to go for our 2nd anniversary in October. Did you do a tour or were you independent? Did you do any daytrips like to Versaille or Reims? Our plan is to do Rome and Paris. About 4 days in Paris and 4 days in Rome. TIA.
Re: cjsbdl**
Ooooh, how fun! I want to go back so badly. Soon, I hope.
We traveled on our own. My MIL/FIL lived in Paris for seven years and DH is very, very familiar with the city, so we felt totally comfortable planning and traveling on our own. My MIL actually put together most of our itinerary--it would've been dumb for me to try since she knows the city like the back of her hand.
My best advice for Paris is to not plan more than one structured activity per day. This is a walking city, for sure, so you want to make sure you have enough time to explore the city on foot. It would be a travesty, to me, to pack your days with museum and tourist site visits and miss out on all the neighborhood shopping/eating/etc. For instance, we would plan a trip to The Louvre on one day and spend the rest of the day wandering around that arrondissement, then back to the hotel for a nap around 4pm, then out to dinner at 9pm. It's the perfect way to see Paris. I have plenty of recs for you regarding restaurants, etc., if you want them as you get closer.
We did Versailles and it was fun. Definitely worth the train trip out there, especially if you're a history buff. It took most of one day.
We spent two nights outside Paris--one at Mont St. Michel, which is a FABULOUS experience and one in the Loire Valley.
In my opinion, though, if you have only four days in Paris your time would be best spent there--and save the trips outside Paris for another trip. You will want four full days in Paris.
Let me know if you have any specific questions or want recommendations. If I don't have the answers my husband or MIL certainly will.
Have fun planning!!
