Vandy Job interview- I've got ???'s

I'd love some insight/help. MH and I'll be flying down to Nashville from Boston for a job interview at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital next week. The last time I was in Nashville I was probably 10 so we could us some help. If I take the job- what are some good neighborhoods to live in? Looking to spend 300K at the max, would like to be relatively close to the hospital (less than 20min drive), are fine with a townhouse but would like 3 bedrooms preferably. We'll be in Nashville for 3 days and are hoping to try to get a feel of the city- and would also appreciaty any recommendations on things to see/places to eat etc. The hotel we're staying at is on the Vandy campus and we'll have a rental car. Thanks so much.

Re: Vandy Job interview- I've got ???'s

  • Hi there. I work at VCH - good luck on your interview. If you want to stay under $300K w/ 3BR, I think you'll probably need to look in Bellevue. You could get something nice there and is beginning to boom - its coming out of being a sleeper town. Its 15 mins when there isnt traffic but its more like 30-ish in rush hour. Hopefully a poster in Bellevue can give you an accurate travel time. I live right by Vandy, but it is NOT cheap. We spent more than your limit for a smaller home w/ 3BR. PIB. If you would do a townhouse, you could look east of town -- near Donelson -- be about 15-20 minutes away in rush hour. There are some new townhouses being built on Lebanon Rd/Spence Lane area. I lived in a townhouse there before we moved by Vandy and it was ok. As far as things to do, I would get to know the Hillsboro Village area right by VCH. There are lots of places to eat and little shops that are fun to check out. Green Hills is a great area, 5 minutes down Hillsboro road from Vandy. An upscale mall, new pedestrian shopping area and lots of food choices. If you have any questions, feel free to page me. You will love Nashville and the children's hospital is just wonderful.
  • I live out in bellevue and the commute isn't terrible.  I posted more about it in a post called "moving to nashville" or something like that.  It was more about apartment living but I did talk about the commute.

A decent 2 bedroom townhome in Bellevue is a little over 200K so you can easily get a 3 bedroom around 300K.  Good luck!
  • We just made the move from Donelson to Mount Juliet. I can honestly say I am so happy here. We lived in Doneslon for several years while we were finishing up college and things progressively got worse (more crime). Mount Juliet is a bit further than 20 minutes but it's worth it to me. :-)

    Check out realtracs.com
Here's some county info that will help you search.
    Nashville is in Davidson Co.
Mount Juliet is in Wilson Co.

    Good Luck!

  • Ditto the realtracs.com recommendation - if you want to stay near the hospital, search in Area 2.  I myself would never want to do the commute on 40 W in the morning from Mt. Juliet or Donelson into the Vanderbilt area, but other people have a higher tolerance for traffic.  I live in Sylvan Park and love it.  You can find a small home for less than 300K in this neighborhood - but typically they are older and in need of some work. I like West Meade and Bellevue - there are a lot of nice, affordable options in those neighborhoods.
  • Bellview is nice, we have friends that live there and they love it. I live in Donelson. We like it, but some neighborhoods are better than others. It takes me 15mins to get to Vandy with no traffic. 40W doesnt have to be terrible in the morning, it all depends on when you leave. Plus there is the commuter train that goes from Lebabon to downtown and Vandy has a shuttle that takes you from the train station to campus.

  • Lebabon = Lebanon.

  • Thanks for all the advice- I really appreciate it. MH and I are definately looking forward to our trip down there.
  • MH & I live in Brentwood and we love it.  We live down Old Hickory and there are plenty of houses in your $ range. We can usually be anywhere in town in 20 min. hope it helps- Also if you are going to be around Vandy there are lots of places to eat downtown. We love PF Changs(chinese), Virago & Ru Sans(sushi), Flemings is awsome(Steak) flemings and pf changs are in the same plaza off West End. Good Luck
