zumba at the Y?

Has anyone been yet? I have been twice and love it! For anyone with a dance background its a fantastic work out. They offer at all the different Ys but I have only been to the class on Saturdays with Jennifer. If anyone's been and can recommend the others I would love to hear it? I would like to try doing this twice a week. It breaks up the monotony of elliptical machine & treadmill. TIA.

Re: zumba at the Y?

  • That's funny that you mention this!  My husband and I just signed up for a membership at the Green Hills Y, and on the way home, while looking through a bunch of handouts we picked up about their programs, DH says to me, "What the heck is zumba?"  I didn't know either - but it sounds fun!  I may have to check it out - but I have no dance background.  Is it only for people that have some dancing ability?  I probably would make a fool of myself. ;)
  • I have not been, but am interested to try it out.  Which Y do you go to?  A lady (can't remember her name) in one of my other dance classes got certified to teach Zumba and I think was going to teach in Bellevue.  She is nice, probably late 30's/early 40's, long dark hair, usually wears sports bras and exercise pants only.

  • I mostly go to the Y at Concord Road and Maryland Farms. Jennifer who teaches at Maryland Farms on Saturday mornings has a dance background and is very motivating. She wears a heart monitor too and tells you how many calories in an hour she burns. Its been over 500 for both classes. If you can follow basic choreography like grapevines, box steps and charlestons you should be okay! Try it! Its fun!
  • that class is always packed at the new Y in Mt. Juliet. Looks like alot of fun...I think I'll try it next time! :)
  • What time is the class on Saturday morning?  I need something to motivate me to move off the bed/coach before noon.

  • I've been by during the one at the donelson y and it is pretty busy.  I think its around noon time on Saturday.

  • The class starts at noon which is great so I can wake up and be a little leisurely, drop off the recycling and then I will do a warm up on a treadmill for about 10 minutes before going to class. That is one more thing about Y classes, there's not really any warm up so you have to stretch out and warm up yourself before class begins. Because when the music starts its GO time. :)
