Apts near Notre Dame- HELP please!
Hi everyone! My husband and I are moving out to the South Bend area because he is attending law school at Notre Dame. We are looking for a newer apartment that allows dogs (we have 2) We would like a place that isn't filled with undergrad students and it would be a plus to be in a nicer area. I have read some things about areas in South Bend having a high crime rate but I really don't know anything about the area. We are visiting Tuesday and it would be helpful for some suggestions. Thanks so much!
Re: Apts near Notre Dame- HELP please!
There was a post about this a few months ago, you can scroll down and look for it--I believe the subject was Mishawaka Apt recs.
My fi is currently a 1L. I was in the Bend doing our apartment search just a few weeks ago.
I suggest checking out Main Street Village. I am fairly certain they allow dogs with a deposit (they might have a weight limit though.) They are probably the nicest and newest apartments we looked at when we moved up here, and it's maybe 2 miles from campus (straight across on douglas.) I think there are move grad students/young professionals living there than undergrads as well.
As far as crime, we have found that it's really tricky up here because it seems that neighborhoods from good to really bad in a matter of a block or 2. There are many very very nice areas though.
Good luck!
Mel
This is probably too late since I'm sure you've already visited. Just a couple notes. One nice thing about this area is you can get just about any where in about 15 minutes. It depends a little on whether or not you plan on walking/riding a bike to class. If not, then any thing in Mishawaka or South Bend would be fine. You'll probably find more in Mishawaka. I have a friend that lived in Runaway Bay for several years and never had any issues.
As for crime... I think a lot of it is over exagerated. I lived right downtown in what many would consider the "hood" and never had a bit of trouble. I don't think you'll have much trouble with apartment complexes. If you decide to rent a house, you might want to be more careful.
Hope your trip went well.
