Good neighborhoods in Indy?

I'm hoping you all can help....I am relatively new to Indy.  I currently live in Franklin Township but I'm needing to move (husband left).  I also have a 4 month old son.  I'm looking for a relatively safe area with good schools where I can raise my son.  I need housing to be rather affordable since I'm living on my own.  So far I have been looking in Beech Grove and Franklin Township.  Tomorrow I am going to see a home in Warren Township around 23rd and German Church.  Does anyone know if this is an okay area?

Also, any other suggestions for good neighborhoods to look in?  Thanks everyone.  :)

Re: Good neighborhoods in Indy?

  • Hi there! I live in Indy-in the Castleton area, and let me tell you-we're looking to leave this area. This part of town is expensive and crowded. We had thought of looking more on the westside, northwest side, or even Greenwood. I have heard that Greenwood is a good place to get your money's worth-you can get a nice place to live that's affordable, and it's a cute little town.

Our situation here is only temporary though. We will be looking to relocate to Fort Wayne in the next year or so.
There are a lot of safe parts of Indy, and some that are really horrible-the problem is just the affordability. That's our main problem with this city. I would just say look where you've been looking or try Greenwood.
  • I live near 38th/German Church, and I'm sure the neighborhood you're visiting tomorrow is where my inlaws live.  It's a decent area, very affordable.  Currently my neighborhood is in IPS schools, so we're trying to sell and plan to be in Warren Twp schools.  I think the schools are great.  The neighborhood you're looking in is a Dura community that was finished by KB Homes.  There seems to be lots of younger families in that neighborhood. I do know that some bad-A kids were abusing the rules of the play equipment and caused the HOA to remove the play ground stuff....that stinks! DH and I are are focusing our search south of Washington though.  It's much quieter, and doesn't get the traffic that we do north of Wash street (lots between Washington/Pendleton Pike).  So I'm not sure what your budget is, but check out Hidden Lakes, Cedar Springs, Creekside Woods, Creston Ridge also. You can get lots of options in the 110K-150K range.
Good luck, and sorry to hear about your circumstances for going thru this.  Hugs! Let me know if you have any other questions/need help!
  • Might find something you're looking for farther east, in Hancock county. Greenfield schools...New Pal schools...Mt. Vernon schools. That's probably least to most expensive in that order, although I'm not sure.

Sorry to hear about what you're going through. Let me know if you have any questions about the Greenfield area/Hancock Co, and I'm also pretty familar with the Beech Grove area.

  • I live on the southside/Greenwood. I like it down here because I am 15 min from downtown/work so I have access to all the great things downtown has and am right near 465 if I want to go anywhere else around the city yet the community still feels smaller and less crowded and crazy than the northside for example. The schools are terrific both public and private and there are little corners like old southport, greenwood, homecroft, etc that are affordable, quiet, and absolutely beautiful with sidewalks, big back yards, big old trees... just really cozy. At the same time its growing yet still accessable and I feel more controlled than in other parts of the city... plus if you live just over the line in Johnson County the county taxes are lower :-)  If you have any questions page me.
  • I don't know if you have any opposition to living on the west side, like if it's too far from work or something like that, but I live in Avon and it is very nice.  Nice area, great schools (my DH teaches in the Avon school system) and housing is very affordable.  We really like it out here.
  • Ditto Carmela.  I live in New Pal and have found it to be very affordable and the school system is great.  I personally really like Hancock County.
  • We live in Camby and got a very affordable new construction house. I don't really know a whole lot about all of the schools around, they are Decatur Township schools. I've heard good things about elementary schools, but we don't have kids yet, so I'm not much help there.
