Voter savvy nesties....

How do I go about changing my party affiliation?  The only thing I see online at in.gov is for new registration/change of address.....so how about party affiliation?  Thanks!

Re: Voter savvy nesties....

  • Its my understanding/experiance that when you actually go and cast your vote (in primaries) you tell them which ticket you want (therefore declairing). So as long as you are all registered I think you are good...someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
  • Erika is correct.  You don't really "register" as a D or R in Indiana.  Instead, at the primary, you request a D or R ballot.  (In fact, sometimes hard-core Ds or Rs will vote in the OTHER party affiliation's primary, simply to skew the votes... ie... they're hopeful that their vote will help the more 'unelectable' candidate win, therefore putting THEIR political party/candidate in a better spot.)  I will say that it is recorded in the statewide voter file whether you requested a D or R ballot.  Political parties or candidates will then use this information to determine their mailing lists for political literature.  For example, if a candidate is pretty conservative, they might download a list of registered voters that have requested Republican ballots in the last 3 Republican primaries.

Probably more than you ever cared to know, but just thought I'd share!
  • Thanks ladies!  I didn't know it was that easy.  I came from a very conservative area, but have become very liberal over the past few years....so very interested in the Democratic side this year.  Good to know! :)
