Meals for guests. .. .help

My inlaws will be here in a few weeks and I am not used to entertaining  overnight guests. I need some delicious tried and true recipes.

What are your favorite meals to cook for overnight guests?

 breakfast/brunch/lunch and snacks.

Re: Meals for guests. .. .help

  • I love entertaining so here are some of my suggestions.

I try to keep things as simple as possible when we have company... I think part of being a good hostess is making it feel effortless.

For breakfast I've found these bagel sandwiches that seem to have gone over well the last few times we had company.  I get them at bilo and they're southern home brand.  It's just half a bagel with scrambled eggs, cheese and bacon or sausage on them (we prefer the bacon). They come 4 to a box, and guests ususally either eat 2, or eat one along with cereal.

I usually just put those on a plate on our kitchen island along with a variety of single serving cereals http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CSEFQ0 and a bowl of fresh fruit.  Or sometimes I'll do cinnamon rolls that I make the dough etc before the guests arrive and just keep it in the fridge and then bake whenever we're ready for them.

For dinner, we have a gas grill so that makes really easy meals.  We're getting company this weekend, so Thursday night I'll go ahead and get veggie Kabobs ready to put on the grill and then just store them in my fridge in freezer bags until we're ready for them and my husband will grill steaks that night.

Also Costco is great for foods that are easy for entertaining.  There is a cheese and spinach ravioli there in the freezer section that is really good and comes with a seasoning packet so you don't even need to buy sauce (just add olive oil).  We're going to serve that with grilled chicken sliced on top.  I also like to top it with Costco's Bruchetta topping.

For lunch we generally eat out since we're out doing things around town or around the area.  I usually keep some buns and lunch meat and chips around the house though, just in case.

Hope this helps!  I also keep a little basket with snacks in the guest room.  I think it's uncomfortable when you're staying with someone and their eating schedule is really different from your own so you find yourself hungry but feeling weird raiding their kitchen.  In the basket right now there are 2 bottles of water, nutrigrain bars, packages of those sandwich crackers, and individual size packages of peanuts (I got the name brand crackers and peanuts at the dollar store in packages of 6 I believe).

  • Thanks MrsZ!! I love all your ideas. Do you happen to have a delish recipe for cinnamon rolls? I think those will work perfectly. I will have a house full of 10 people, so I think I will make a few different things. I definitely need to get super organized though.I love the snack basket idea as well, I'll definitely do that!

One other question---for anyone with kids----what should I do to prep for kids? what makes your life easier when you visit people?

  • This is an easy bread maker cinnamon roll recipe... I've never made bread without my trusty bread maker :)  http://www.ehow.com/how_2129260_cinnamon-rolls-using-bread-machine.html

I dont have kids, but when we have company with kids, I try to have some really easy stuff on hand like chicken nuggets that just need microwaved and easy mac etc in case the kids are hungry at different times etc.  I also attribute these to saving my furniture many times: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2403649&CAWELAID=107513150

If you have a DVD player it may be good to have it in the kids room so if they are fussy the parents can pop in a kid friendly movie.
