weird. As far as i know you can drive from Anchorage to Whittier- but there is a tunnel. Maybe the tunnel is closed in certain parts of the year and that's why they have you taking the ferry from Valdez. Page FlexibleBride on ML- She lives in Anchorage.

I live in Kenai, AK and can tell you this map is completely and totally WRONG!  The drive any sane and normal person would take would take you South along the Seward Highway to Portage/Whittier turnoff.  Then, you drive down a side road past the Portage Glacier and stay to the left around the Begich Boggs Visitor Center.  At the end of the road there is a tunnel with lots of waiting lanes after a toll booth.  The tunnel opens up for one-way traffic on a fixed schedule and you can drive through the tunnel to Whittier.  Hope this helps...the internet can be helpful to a point, then local knowledge can take over. :-)  Hope you have safe travels.
