Some questions re: Boise!

DH is considering taking a job in Boise next year. The company is specifically in Meridian, which I know has nice houses and good schools, so we would probably live there.

I've heard traffic is a bit of a problem in the area because of the growth, but that it's not out of hand.

I've kept an eye on the housing market on Craigslist (but know CL isn't always the best indicator of what's really going on). It seems like the house prices aren't really going up much, and that you can get some deals from people needing to dump their houses (avoiding foreclosure, etc.). Do you think this is the case? What do you see happening w/ real estate? What can you buy for $150k? $180k? $200k?

Is there a lot to do for kids and SAHMs?

How about recreational stuff, like camping or hunting (a must-have for DH. lol)

Any other info would be greatly appreciated! I asked a question a few months ago and you were all very helpful!

Re: Some questions re: Boise!

  • Hi there!

Another 2008 Idaho Knottie here.  I am a local real estate consultant and am happy to answer any questions you may have about the area.  Feel free to email me directly at northernvagrl @ yahoo . com

You can still get quite a bit for your money in the area and there is not better time to buy, however, depending on your financial situation it is becoming more difficult to borrow at a high LTV.

I moved to Boise and would consider myself a big city refugee.  Boise is AWESOME!  There is tons to do from camping, hunting, boating (at Lucky Peak), tons of hiking.  Meridian specifically offers the Meridian Speedway as well as Boondocks and Roaring Springs water park for kids.

Anyways, I'm not trying to solicit any business, but wanted to let you know that there is a fellow knottie who knows quite a bit about the area and real estate values.

    Take care!

  • I moved to Boise in 2005 From Seattle.    I was used to hours of traffic.  Boise is not that bad.  I love it here I have lived in Boise, Meridian, and now own a house in Nampa.  There is a lot to do and you don't have to go very far to do outdoorsy stuff.  I love it here and I will only move if I really have to!
  • Like the pp say, there is tons to do here! I have lived here since 1984, so I notice the growth tremendously. But still, Boise is known as the city with a small-town feel. Incredible outdoor opportunity nearby, fishing and boating and walking along the river in town... as well as camping and skiing within an hour's drive.  Meridian commuters do find a bit of traffic coming into the city, but if you are living IN Meridian and working IN Meridian, I don't think you'll have too much of a problem. You can still get decent prices in Meridian as far as houses go... but I still remember not too long ago when you could get a small house for under $100,000. Gone are those days!!! A condo I  lived in and bought for $60,000 7 years ago is now selling for $130,000 (no I am not on the good end of that financial windfall, bummer).  Lots of stuff for kids here, too. The Discovery Center of Idaho, lots of community events, the Fair, Art in the Park, floating the river, the zoo... Boise is an incredible place to live. :)
