Seattle girls in boise

It looks like there are a few ladies from seattle now living in boise. My fiance and I live near seattle and are thinking of moving out of state, somewhere that the cost of living isn't so high. So are you all happy that you moved, and is the COL lower in Idaho? Anyone know about the hospitals in the boise area (I'm an RN). Any advice would be much appreciated. Oh, and we wanna live in the 'burbs, not the city.
THANKS!

Re: Seattle girls in boise

  • I moved from Kent, WA five years ago to Boise. I love it here, but there are some things that you have to get used to. These are the biggest complaints from friends/family:
    1. We do not have a Nordstroms anywhere near us.
    2. It gets to and over 100 degrees in the summer, but most homes have a/c.
    3. Cost of living is lower, but our minimum wage currently stands at $5.15 as of May 10, 2007.
    4. Like most cities, the further you move out and around Boise, the cheaper housing is. We bought a new 3bd/2 ba home in Nampa 3 years ago for under $100,000. But they are now selling our home for $180,000 in a different phase of our neighborhood.
    5. Boise is the City of Trees, but we are not green like WA. Everyone seems to miss the greenery.
    6. If you want to fly anywhere, like NY, CA or Hawaii, you have to make a stop in Salt Lake, Portland, or Seattle.
The "best" hospital that I have heard compliments about is St. Lukes, however I have heard good things about St. Alphonsus, not heard such good things about Mercy Hospital.
All in all, I am very satisfied that I moved here. I even married one of the locals! I chose to be married here rather than Seattle and saved a fortune. Remember, Seattle is only about a 55-1:05 flight depending on which airline you fly and Southwest and Horizon always have great deals.

Page me if you have any questions. Thanks.
  • ExpressJet Airlines (sub of Delta) now has direct flights to/from Boise to many places.

We moved here from Spokane, WA and I love it.  If you are an outdoors person, this is the place.  St. Lukes and Alphonsus are the hospitals I know of.  They are currently building some new hospitals around town as well.  I make a Cali salary (I work from home for a Cali based company) so I cant really relate to the COL but My DH works for the city and I believe we could live on one salary.  We bought our home for $255K in SE Boise near Barber Park and Bown Crossing.  I have been told that Eagle and Meridian are affordable as well.
  • thanks for the info, girls! Boy, your board is REALLY slow!
  • tell me about it...it sucks!
  • I moved from Seattle ( Bellevue) 2 years ago and I miss the rain (never thought I would say that)  and yet we have 4 distinct seasons.  COL is about 20% lower than in Seattle but that means often living further out of Boise Proper.  I love how spread out Boise is though.  Now when i go to seattle to visit I feel Like I am going to the "Big City"  and I am always glad to come home.  It took a little while to get used to the change of pace and dress ( you can wear jeans almost anywhere and not get looked at funny) and to get used to the Idaho version of traffic (nowhere near the 520).  i love Boise and am Glad to have made it my home.  I will always love Seattle but Boise is where I was meant to live!
