DH and I went to Opening Day on Monday in Camden Yards. Tuesday morning all my Yankees friends (I grew up in NY) called me to see if the booing was that bad or if the media was just crying about a few boos. Nope, the booing was pretty severe.
I just put a few crappy photos on my blog and I put a short video clip (also crappy) of Teixeira getting booed. If anyone is interesting in checking it out, the link is in my siggy.
Re: Teixeira booing
Here's the short version:
Tex grew up just outside of Baltimore and in the off season he went on and on about how he was an O's fan. He also said he would love to play in Baltimore and be near his family. The O's went after him very aggressively in order to make a deal, but in the end Tex ended up signing with the Yankees for much more money.
That sort of thing happens all the time in professional sports, but for some reason Baltimore fans were very offended. There are multiple radio stations down here that were organizing entire groups of people to go to games and just boo Tex.
The whole thing is pretty crazy. Especially, considering that Camden Yards has a nickname as the "Yankee Stadium of the South." It isn't uncommon for there to be more Yankee and Red Sox fans to be in Camden Yards then there are O's fans.
Interesting. I'm in So Cal and an Angels fan. I didn't know the O's were going after him too, I thought it was us and the Red Sox, then the Yanks at the last minute. I knew he wanted to be near his family though.
Its all about the dollar for most players. I'm glad he didn't sign with us, I think he's overrated and certainly not worth $20 mil + a yr.
I have no sympathy for Tex, he got what he wanted, Yanks and $$$.
ha, I booed Tex b/c he graduated in the same class as my brother, and by all accounts was a total @ss. I have heard from other people in the area as well who have seen him at bars, have mutual friends, etc. who have said that the same thing.
It varies a lot from story to story how aggressively Baltimore went after him, but the one that I've heard the most is that we offered him somewhere between 120-140 million. I have a friend who is the one person I know who likes Texeira (grew up in the same neighborhood, Texeira was the best man in his sister's wedding or something like that, I cant recall) and he says that for Texeira it had little to do with money and more about the potential to win a world series.
I don't blame him all that much for choosing the Yankees, although I do think that he shouldn't profess such love for the O's but then go to NY, but I do resent it whenever a jerk makes good like did. Petty, of course. But I can't help it, haha.
It's always about the money with the players.
I hate it when they say that they have always wanted to play for the hometown team.
Does anyone really thing Stephen Strausberg is willing to take a discount to play for the Padres? Nahhhh, didn't think so.
