Help please! Possible move to Huntington,WV area.

Hi everyone. I was hoping you all might be able to assist me with a few questions. My DH has a job offer in Huntington, WV. The people there have told him that it is really close to KY and OH so a move to Huntington itself may not be necessary. We will be coming up soon to check out the area, but I was just curious if anyone here could give me a feel for what Huntington is like. I know it is near Marshall, but I don't know much else. Is there a lot of new construction homes in the area, is the area depressed in any way? I would like to know the good and the bad. Thanks so much for all the info you can provide. :)

Re: Help please! Possible move to Huntington,WV area.

  • Welcome to the tri-state!  Im originally from Ona (about 20 min outside of Huntington).  Parts of Huntington have MAJOR drug problems.  A good place to start is www.herald-dispatch.com - I believe they still have a "Moving to the Area" page.  That is the local newspaper for H'ton.  Other places outside the city limits are great and even closer to things like the Mall & Walmart/Target: Barboursville (Mall & Walmart/Target - MAJOR shopping area), Milton, Ona, Lesage - all around 15 to 20 minutes from downtown.  Huntington is getting some new elementary and middle schools - one central high school.  The eastern end of the county is great (thats where I am from).  It is country like living but only 5 minutes from the Huntington Mall in Barboursville.  They have basically one elementary school per town and one main high school for the eastern end of the county.

The cities above are all in WV.

Cities & Towns in KY - Ashland, Catletsburg (there is a mall & Walmart in Ashland).  The KY part of the Tri-State is very industry based - things to note - much cheaper gas prices here.  Not sure about taxes though.

Cities & Towns in OH - South Point, Proctorville.  Be leary about Proctorville - the traffic across the bridge can be hellish!  Again - cheaper gas and different tax benefits.

As far as new construction goes - Teays Valley / Culloden is a booming area that is around 30 minutes from downtown.  Lots of options from townhomes to 3 acre homes.

If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer - amanda_mcclellan at suddenlink.net

  • Dont know if you are still looking in the area, but I grew up in huntington wv and not live in proctorville oh (just across the bridge).  I am a graduate from Marshall and a Realtor with Old Colony Realtors in Huntington.  I would love to help you look for a new home and show you the area.     Email me if you would like to talk   jtaylor@oldcolony.com  Good Luck!!
