anyone live in charleston?
we are flying down next weekend to look at homes in c'ton---they are way more expensive than I thought they would be! We def. want to live in the city, though, after years of awful commutes. A lot of people have told me that south hills/k city is better than the edgewood area because of schools. however, I'm not so worried about schools at this point---just for resale value. Anyway, any advice on preferable areas, neighborhoods, home prices, would be great. I'm also expecting our first child in August, so that's a factor, too. Thank you!!

You should definately check out the South Hills/Kanawha City areas if re-sale value is what you are looking for. We just built a new house in one of the newer subdivision off of Corridor G (it is still the South Hills School district). There are also new subdivisions in the South Hills area as well if you ar looking to build. Most houses in S0uth Hills will go for $300,000 and up (and some will go for a lot more than that). In lower Kanawha City, you can probably find something in the $200,000 range (although the closer you get to the river, the more expensive they will be). Homes in our neighborhood are being built in the $350,000 and up range and are re-selling for more than that. Edgewood is a beautiful area, but I agree with it not being a great school district. It really just depends on what you are looking for. A good realtor should be able to point you in the right direction.

You may already be here now, but I haven't checked the local board lately. South Hills is definitely the nicest area in Charleston, but you should also check out the Fort Hill area and parts of South Charleston. I would avoid the Edgewood area just because it is so close to the West Side where there is a lot of crime. Parts of Kanawha City are nice but some parts are not so great. There are a lot of newer homes in the Teays Valley area, but that means a commute of 20+ minutes each way.

I currently live in Dunbar, but grew up in South Hills and that is where my parents still live. It is a great area, but pricey in some places. My parents alway said...buy the cheapest house in the neighborhood...so that when you fix it up you can sell it for more.
