Name Change Question

Hi, ladies!

I'm new to the Nest, so forgive me if it's a newbie mistake to post this question on here.

I live in Chicago. ?Today, I went to the Social Security office, DMV and my bank to change my name to my married name. ?Can anyone tell me if that is what it takes to legally change my name? ?I've Googled this but can't find anything definite. ?I read somewhere that the marriage license itself is documentation of a legal name change, but it doesn't show my full married name anywhere, just my maiden name.

Thanks for any help/advice/tips/tricks you can offer.

Re: Name Change Question

  • A marriage license is NOT proof of a name change!  Many women these days don't even change their name (even though of course they have a marriage license).  Take your marriage license to the SS Office.  Change it there.  That is the first step to legal name changing.  Then, like you did, change it at the DMV.    And bank as well.  You did all the right steps.  Those are the most important.  Social Security makes it legal.  Don't forget to change it on your passport and any other thigs you may need.  :)

    Congrats and welcome.

  • Just to clarify - is changing my name at the SS office and the DMV considered legally changing my name?  Or do I need to go to the courthouse to do that?

    Thanks!

  • SS office and DMV = legal :)
  • Once you get the marriage license go to the DMV.  They'll change your license and give you a form to send in to SS office.  From there, you can do credit cards and anything else.  That's pretty much all it takes!

  • I did DMV, then SS office, then banks. Called credit cards, frequently flier programs, etc.  Passport by mail. Never bothered with magazines - wasn't worth it to me.

The marriage license has your husbands full name and your maiden name, they get the last name from his since its on there.
