A Very (Scary) Close Call

After yesterday's tragedy it sounds like Giants pitcher Joe Martinez narrowly missed out on another one when he was hit by a line drive.

Re: A Very (Scary) Close Call

  • Yikes!  That is scary!  Baseball seems like such a "safe" sport compared to so many others (like football or rugby), and yet that little ball can be dangerous!!

  • I was always terrified during DH's college baseball games. The ball comes off those metal bats way too fast. The NCAA would switch to wooden bats, but they are just so expensive because they break more often.

    Do you remember Juan Encarnacion?

Poor guy is still on the Cardinals payroll, but unable to play.

    I haven't forgotten :(

That was really, really scary to watch live, too...Mike Cameron (the guy that hit the ball) was on his knees praying afterwards.  Cameron is *still* on amphetamines for a head injury he suffered in a collision as (while on the Mets) a few years ago.  Scary stuff.

  • I didn't see Martinez getting hit, but one of the pitchers on my team (Chris Young, Padres) was hit on the forehead by an Albert Pooholes line drive and was out for months. And Mike Cameron had his collision while playing against the Padres-then was traded to the Padres to play for a few years. Truly scary stuff.
