Chicago Nesties
Dear Community,

Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. As a result of these updates, members of the Nest Community will need to change their password in order to continue participating in the community. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

If you have questions about this, please email help@theknot.com.

Thank you.

Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.

Composing Posts

  • You now have easier access to stylistic options, including old, italics, underline, indent, bulleted and numbered lists
  • Inserting images is now easier and can be done by clicking on a?button and inputting the url (or easier for those who have trouble remembering the code/consistently getting tinyurls to post)
  • There's a variety of emoticons available, including Pizza and Beer
  • You have toolbar options to cut, copy paste and paste from Word
  • If you're an HTML whiz and prefer to edit your post using html code, that option is now there
  • In IE, there is a spell check option.? In Firefox, misspelled words are underlined in red and users are given the option to correct the errors
  • If you wish to set up polls with fixed answers, there is a poll function
  • You can check for related posts (which I'm not sure how this function works yet- potentially it is related to the tags?)
  • The preview function allows you to do just that- preview you post
  • You can tag your posts with keywords, which allow for better searches in the community, which brings me to...
  • The search function works! The search function works! (although presently it only appears to be working on the new local boards)
  • Viewing preferences: I can sort by last post date, author, rating, views and replies (both ascending and descending).? Additionally, I can filter for the date I want to view posts from; like other message boards, new threads are bumped to the top
  • Ranking posts: this option used to exist, but it was widely abused.? It is back again, so hopefully nesties will use it in a civil manner
  • Quote function- If I want to quote someone in a reply, I can choose to do this when I am getting ready to reply to someone
  • Delete function- If a user chooses to delete a post, it requires providing a reason.? The instructions also mention that an email will be sent, but I haven't yet seen how this works
  • Edit function!? I've been waiting on this one for?a while
  • Contact- this is one of the more hotly debated new features.? You can PM another nestie, email another nestie, view the nestie's profile or find the nestie's other posts using this function.? In order to protect your IRL identity, it might be wise to set up a spam/nest email and change your email settings under "My Nest" in your account to use this email
  • Nestie information- You can see number of posts, number of points and the date the nestie joined under the handle (there is still confusion as to whether the number of posts represent posts just from that particular board or overall/what points actually represent); there also appears to be a little "newbie" picture under most all posters' information, unless they have many posts/nesticles, and then they become recognized as "bronze posters"
  • You can easily see who the last poster in the thread was/when the post occurred without having to open the post- you can also see the number of replies/the number of views

What's gone

  • Nesticles (they're now little squares and appear that they might be board-related) May come back after all the boards have been converted over,
  • The little speak bubble to show which nesties are online (however you now can see what appears to be a random list of nesties that are online
  • Bold unread posts/normal read posts (now there is a little green icon out to the side of the post that is bold when there is a post in the thread that is unread/not bold when all posts in the thread have been read); the appearance of a star on popular posts also occurs in red

Hopefully this information provides new users a helpful guide.? I'm sure there are things I missed, but hopefully this is a good starting off point that can be augmented by others!
