Help a Tourist - possibly stupid ??

Hello from the Cincinnati Board!

DH & I are planning our first family vacation, to Chicago.

Everyone we have talked to has recommended that we stay in the suburbs, and take the train into town.

I guess you just take the stroller on the train, from what they say?

So, now I'm looking at hotels, and most of the ones I'm finding are anywhere from 1-5 miles from the train station, but the hotels offer shuttles to the train station.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out how we get DD there. Do they generally have infant car seats for the shuttles?
What if (God forbid) we miss a train or something and need a taxi? Do they generally keep car seats on hand?

TIA!

Re: Help a Tourist - possibly stupid ??

  • Really? Stay in the suburbs? It seems like that would be more of a hassle. Whatever you might save on hotel, you'll spend on transportation...and you'll waste a lot of time getting too and from the city.

Have you looked into hotels in the city? They might not be as expensive as you think. There's a newish Holiday Inn right up the street from us (506 W. Harrison) in the South Loop. Cab rides to Michigan Ave. might be $5, but depending on your visit dates, it's also easily walkable.

Just seems like if this is your first big vacation, you'd want to spend as much time noodling around in the city as possible. Besides, after a long day of touristing, it'll be hard on you (and kid) to hoof it back out to the 'burbs.

  • I agree with PP, I think it would be worlds easier to stay downtown- you'll spend just as much on transportation not to mention what a hassle it is going back and forth to the burbs all day.
  • Ditto PPs.  I don't have children, so maybe that was a rec from friends of yours with kids to stay in the burbs, but I think that is a bad idea.  Stay downtown somewhere.  You will spend a little more on hotel costs, but will be right in the center of things and won't have to wait on the train everyday, and if you get tired, you can always go back to your hotel for a bit...can't do that if you're in the burbs!  Good luck, have fun :)
  • Stay downtown! It's not worth the hassle with an infant and strollers on the train are just a big ol pain.If you do miss a train after all the morning commute trains, you'll be waiting another hour before Metra has another one for you. Plus, you are going to be on Metra for up to 1 hour before you get downtown depending on where you stay (assuming Schaumburg area).

If you find a hotel around Michigan Ave (I just looked at rooms at the Marriott and the rates weren't awful...if you want something more inexpensive stay somewhere like the Meridian)you'll be within a good walking distance of anything you really want to see or a short taxi drive away...do not expect a child seat in any taxi here...you will not find that.

Have a great time and bring some good walking shoes...be sure to visit Millenium Park =)

  • I've never stayed in the city but would love to.  I have 3 kids and live in the burbs, it is really hard to drag kids with strollers on the train!
  • Taxis and shuttles will not have car seats.  I echo what everyone else has said about staying downtown...staying in the suburbs just does not make sense!  Pick a hotel that's close to transportation, but I'd avoid anything in the Loop, as it's pretty much dead during the weekends and at night.  Most tourists stay near Michigan Ave.

    Enjoy your vacation!
