Using Public Transportation with a 1 year old...

I drove with my DH and DS here to spend the week while my DH works.  We have our car but since we are staying right on the Magnificent Mile, I really don't want to be driving around.  I would love to go to the aquarium but any suggestions on getting around with a little one?  This may be a dumb question but being from STL and never using PT, I'm clueless.  TIA!

Re: Using Public Transportation with a 1 year old...

  • The #146 bus goes from Michigan Ave to the Shedd. Just make sure you get on the southbound side of the street - the bus drivers will usually be friendly and help you make sure you are getting on the right bus. They also have a little rampy thing they use for strollers. Make sure to have exact change, or a pre-paid card. You can find all that stuff on the website, www.transitchicago.com

  • The Michigan bus is typically crowded.  Your baby is free to ride, and you will be $2.25 or whatever the new fee is.  However, it doesn't go to the aquarium.  I would recommend taking a cab, or better yet, looking up the Free Trolley. There are trolley stops around the city that will take you to various locations for free (Navy Pier, Museum Campus, etc.)  This is prob. a good way to go, but look up when and where the free trolley will pick you up, and keep in mind that there are other trolleys all throughout the city, so if you see one, don't run after it assuming it's the free one!  :)
  • I didn't know the Michigan bus went to the Shedd...ok, do that :)
  • If you wear your baby in a sling or back carrier it's much easier to take the bus. At the very least, use an umbrella stroller, fold it, and carry it on to the bus.
