Need help - where to deliver - Vandy or Baptist???

I recently found out I am pregnant.  I don't have an OB right now but am in the process of finding one.  Before I find one I need to decide where to deliver....Vandy or Baptist.  What are the pros/cons of each?  I am Jewish if that makes any difference (I know Baptist is faith-based).

Thanks!

  • AKKKKKKK! I won't tell anyone- but Yeah!!! I am so happy for you!

I delivered at Baptist and loved it. I suppose they are faith based somehow, but I would never have known if it wasn't in the name. They were wonderful and I think it's listed as the #1 OB hospital in the Southeast.?

My doctor is Dr. Crowe of the WOMEN group. She was fabulous. Dr Kyzer of the same group delivered Olivia and I liked her too. ?

    Congrats!

ps- did you get my email about the GTG this week? Would love to see you!?

  • I'll deliver at Baptist because that's where my OB happens to be affiliated. Baptist is known as the "baby hospital"...labor and delivery is their specialty. I'm sure you can't really go wrong with Vanderbilt in terms of quality of care, but I only know one person who actually delivered there.  She did have a good experience.
  • Another Jew in Nashville? yay! I've not met anyone else who is Jewish! lol

Anyway,  I am delivering at Vandy. My old Ob/gyn was at Baptist and that is a huge baby factory which has many pro and cons b/c of that. I think they ahve around 50 births A DAY.

According to our doula, Centennial is the most "natural" friendly if you're wanting to go that route whatsoever if you are using an ob/gyn and not a Vandy midwife.

I am currently switching to the Vanderbilt Nurse Midwifes.  All the perks of a midwife birth, but at a hospital.

  • I had my daughter at Baptist and had a great experience.  While yes, it is a faith-based hospital, I don't know that it makes any difference.  It's not like they are pushing religion on you or have crosses on the walls everywhere. I don't mean that to sound snarky, I'm sorry if it came off that way. You can always do a tour and see if there is anything that makes you uncomfortable.

Yes, they deliver LOTS of babies, they are also set up with the best NICU in the area.  I had a c-section and everyone, from the nurses, anesthesiologist, etc. were great.  No complaints.

My doctor is Erin Yu of Women's Medical Associates.  She delivers at both Baptist and Centennial.

Thank you for the info.  Honestly, that was what I was worried about....I just didn't want to be somewhere with crosses all over the place and where I may feel uncomfortable (I am extremely reform so not much bothers me).  Your response wasn't snarky at all!!!  That was what I was looking for! :)

  • I've had 2 babies in the past 3 years, both at Baptist and both were c-sections. I had a great experience with both of them, even my emergency c/s at 4am with #2. They just rennovated their L&D floor(s) and the rooms are quite nice now. I don't think I recall even seeing a cross anywhere. I think the only part of it being a "Baptist" hospital would likely be that they won't perform abortions. But there certainly wasn't any religion "thrown around" if you know what I mean.

I would go to Vandy for any other type of surgery need and have had to have my DS rushed to Vandy Children's in an ambulance (while I was at Baptist with 2 day old DD!!), but for giving birth, I would choose Baptist, given that their focus is on babies. That being said, they do have a ton of babies born there. The day before my DD was born was a record day for them and there were like 60 babies born that day, so it was a bit hectic in the nursery according to the nurses, but the only impact to me was that it took longer to get me moved into a post-partum room from an L&D room.

  • I had both my kids at Baptist and had a fabulous experience both times. Everyone I know has delivered there and I've never heard a complaint.

  • I think Baptist is the norm around here but I delivered at Vanderbilt (I work there) and I wanted to correct a PP about the Baptist NICU. I can tell you for a fact that Vanderbilt has the highest rated NICU as far as expertise etc in the state and Baptist babies get transferred to Vanderbilt all the time because they are too sick to be treated there. So if you are high risk or needed specialized care for your baby once he or she was born, you would want to deliver at Vanderbilt or have your baby transferred there.

Vandy doesn't have all the bells and whistles as Baptist, that is really the only difference. It's just not as "pretty."

Just wanted to correct YOU as well, pp....not to start a competition, but to clarify... I work at Baptist & we have ONE of the highest rated NICUs....the ONLY reason we transfer babies to Vandy is if they need specialized treatments or surguries b/c we are not a pediatric hospital. We have a level III NICU (same as Vandy), which means we take >24weeks... Not to make your decision harder, but just to keep you informed! Btw I second Reese's rec b/c my Obgyn is in that office too! I see Dr Barrett... If you have a question about an OB at Baptist, just email me!! resmrn at gmail
High-risk L&D nurse...If in doubt, go to triage!
