Do you donate $$ to your alma mater?
I graduated last May & started paying close to $600/month towards my student loans in November. Almost immediately after graduation I started getting hit with mail, phone calls & emails asking me to donate money. Lately, they're getting more & more frequent and I'm getting more & more annoyed.
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like I'm already paying $600/month... why on earth should I be expected to give more?!? (Not that our budget can handle any more charitable contributions... I've always had a weak spot for nonprofits.)
So tell me, do you give to your alma mater? why or why not?
Re: Do you donate $$ to your alma mater?
I'm with you Bek. I pay mucho dinero to my student loans every month, I think it's crazy for them to expect any more out of me for at least 10 years or so...haha.
Funny story: 6 months after I graduated from UConn I went back to visit a friend. I parked in a lot that USED to be visitor parking, but I didn't know it had switched to students only. I got a ticket. In my appeal for the ticket, I wrote about my confusion with the lots, and the fact that "paying this ticket will get in the way of my ability to donate to the school as an alumni."
They denied my petition. No donations for UConn!
I do. It's a land grant school, and I had many amazing opportunities through it at a lot lower cost than I might have paid to go elsewhere... so I happily give here and there... paying it forward.
I do - I give to my HS and to my college. I met my best friends in the world at both places - they are like family. Plus, I got internships, etc - simply by going to the school . . .I owe them a lot . . .I got a head start there.
But, I am in development/fundraising so I know how important it is. I know it's annoying, but what you may not realize is that for many schools, participation is the most important factor. Gifts of any size are appreciated. If you give 10 buck, you boost your class's participation percentage and you do something nice for your school. Maybe it's just because that's what I do for a living, but I do get where you're coming from. Many, many people feel like you do. . . luckily, for me, not everyone does, though. )
I would love to give more to them, but we are really cutting corners to save for a house so not right now - but definitely in the future. They only have called me once though - it helps that I don't have a home phone anymore!
Instead I give my time - I represent them at local college fairs which I think is more helpful than any $$ I could give. I convince high school kids to go there so their parents can give them lots of $$ instead - ha! The JMU admissions reps don't come this far north and I really think my school is great school, so I like to talk to interested students.
Go Dukes!
No, not now. I'm in the same boat as you. Still paying loans. Not to mention, their tuition went from $24k/year when i was there to over $40k/year today. I think thats just insanity!
However, i do plan to give when i'm more stable in my own finances. Till then, i ignore the phone call when i see it on the caller id.
I always did, although I haven't for the past year or two for several reasons. I will continue as soon as I can - that school shaped my personality, introduced me to my best friends, and prepared me for the life I have today.
I might be missing something, but I don't really understand how paying student loans is the same as donating to the school. I understand the concept of not having extra money to give because of the loans, but the government or a bank is getting that money - it's not going to the school.

no. DH and I have mixed feelings on some of our experiences there, and with professors on tenure etc. And I refuse to donate as long as my old xc coach is still employed there.
I can think of many many places I would rather donate to, like actual charities, above my school. I dont really get donating to someone who I paid to provide me with a service. I would rather donate to groups funding research for things like cancer and alzheimers, or to provide clothes, food, etc to those in need.
I do give what I can. It's really not much, but I truly feel like I owe a lot to the university I attended. I recieved significant finanical aid and I also recieved my Masters degree with full tuition remission. I also work at a university and I see what giving can do.
