PSA - we found money!

someone on my local posted this morning about how she checked the state's unclaimed funds website and discovered she was owed some money.  She submitted her claim and 4 weeks later got a check in the mail for $100! Sweet.

For kicks I decided to check if my name would pop up in the system. No luck. So i tried A's....and apparently they have some old payroll checks she never recieved.  We have no clue if its $50 or $500, but it certainly doesnt hurt to submit the claim and find out! FIL was listed 3 times so i'm really curious to see what he gets.

So, i'm passing along the suggestion to check your state's site (just Google "(state name) unclaimed funds") and see if you've got some money with your name on it!

  • I've been checking these sights for a few years now.  I found my parents a couple grand, my brother $92 and K a few hundred.  But nada for me :-(

I hope A gets a big fat check back! :-)

  • Wow, that's great! Before I opened this up, I was expecting you found $5 in the pocket of your jeans or something. Payroll checks? That's awesome!

The search didn't turn up anything for me, but I know I have $30 floating around in the system somewhere from a checking account that I never used (I got a letter saying the bank closed the account and gave the state my $30).

I've searched those sites before, but I did it again after you posted - nothing for me or C in PA or MA, but her mom and brother each have something small that they apparently still haven't claimed!

  • They say W is owed over $1000 but I am nervous to give personal info.  What do you know about the reputability of these sites?

You should only go through the state agency site.  Every state has one.  NEVER pay anyone to get your money as this is free.  This is the state of NJ site

    http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/missingmoney.shtml

which is the only one I'd trust.
