question-midwives, etc.

Hi ladies- quick question...How far in advance did you set up the initial appointment/consult with the midwives before your TTC start time frame?  And how far in advance did you start tracking your ovulation?

Thanks!

Re: question-midwives, etc.

  • I can answer the second question - started tracking ovulation about 6-8months prior to TTC.

  • You should call the office of the midwife or doctor or RE you are using.  For the midwife group that I and some others on the board are using, there is an initial appointment about 2 months before you plan to start inseminating.

As for tracking ovulation, you can start a month or a couple of months in advance if you want to for your own information (to get an idea of what your cycle is like), but you don't have to start early if you don't mind the element of surprise.

  • our consult was 1 month prior to TTC.

As for tracking, we temped sept, oct, and nov of last year then in feb we started using OPKs (so we'll have 3 months of tracked OPKs before starting insems in May).

  • I think it somewhat depends on what your personal situation is. If you ovulate regularly (or think you do) then you wouldn't have to go in too far in advance. If there are any suspected issues, I'd go in earlier.

We started tracking my temps in May of 2008, and had our first appointments in February of 2009, and are just now finally in a place where we can get started (I had to have a lot of testing done because I have PCOS and ovulate very infrequently [e.g. twice in the last 7 months]). If I had known that testing, etc was going to take so long, we probably would have started appts earlier.

ETA: We first met with the RE the first week of March. But we knew exactly who we wanted to work with (we'd met him before), so we didn't need to leave any time for deciding between REs.
