Door County Recommendations

Hello from a Maine nestie!

My husband and I have decided to spend our first anniversary camping in Door County. I have never been but my aunts rave about it, so I was hoping you ladies may be able to give me some recommendations on good campsites and things to see and do in the area.  We will also be driving from Maine so if you know of any must see places on the way that would be great! Thanks so much!

Re: Door County Recommendations

  • We just went there in Oct for our 1st wedding anniv!!!!

Depending on when you go (its SUPER busy up there in Summer/early Fall) Def camp @ Peninsula State Park! Bring your bikes & kayaks if you have them! There are TONS of bike trails throughout DC. Research the DC chamber of commerce website (or any others) they have TONS of maps!

We stayed @ a hotel, but spent a whole day hiking @ Penisula, I also highly rec. taking the Ferry to Washington Island. BUT take your car or your bikes...'town' is about 4-5 miles inland (we found out the hard way). Allow yourself enough time on the way up to Washington Is to stop at the little towns & stores along the way- crafty, candy, etc....

We spent a day doing a Lighthouse tour (ourselves, you can pay to go on an escorted one). It was fun (Cana Island is the best), but a couple of them you can't actually go on the property b/c they are being used by the Coast Guard...

We also visited a bunch of the wineries up there. Skip Stones Throw, the staff wasn't exactly welcoming or friendly, they have wierd hrs, they didn't have a tour & make you pay for samples :( The best is Door Peninsula winery- its huge!

Good places to eat are Olsons (open seasonally) in Ephriam, Al Johnsons in Sister Bay (yummy Norweigan inspired food), The Cookery in Fish Creek (get there SUPER early for bkfst, its small & really busy), The Old Post Office in Ephriam for Fish Boil is a must- the best food I've EVER had, small crowd-make reservations!!! There are a bunch of really good restaurants in Fish Creek though!

Also, take turns driving up there (or just make your H! :)) the scenery is gorgeous & further up the peninsula there are some absolutely UNREAL houses. Take your time, don't have an adgenda, go w/the flow!

Also, one thing "we" (mostly H) would have liked to have done was tour the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay- if youre into that stuff ;)

Spend some time doing research, there is SO much to do up there depending on when you go. Like I said, we went in late Oct, so A LOT of stuff was closed (some you find out the hard way), but we still found plenty to do.

And, don't worry too much about getting lost up there, once you get past Sturgeon Bay your only options are Hwy 42 or 57. 42 goes up the Westside of the peninsula & 57 goes up the Eastside. :) On a map everything looks a lot farther away then it really is. You can drive from Sturgeon Bay to Northport in under an hr.

HTH!! Feel free to page me if you have any ?'s or want more advice!! GL!

  • As if my post could get ANY longer....

A few places to stop along the way (depending on your time frame)

Def stop in Green Bay, go to Lambeau Field & check that out (its open yr round), & possibly the Packer Hall of Fame depending on your interest level.

Also theres A TON of stuff to do in Milwaukee (again, depending on your time frame) theres the brand new Art Museum, Summerfest in June...Sprecker brewery (the best rootbeer), Miller Brewery...etc! Check down a few posts b/c someone just posted about things to do in this area a few days ago.

Also, in Chicago (check their local board too though) the coolest place I've ever been was the Shedd Aquarium (they even have dolphins!!!!)

    Again, GL & HTH!!

  • DH and I love Door County. We normally stay at a hotel when we're up there, but there's a lot to do and a lot of romantic things too! When is your anniversary? Depending on the time of year will determine what things are available to you as Door County can be very seasonal.

Assuming that you'll be coming during the on-season (DH and I normally go off season!) - I would recommend any of the wineries (Stones Throw is your "normal" white or red wine, whereas Door County Winery or any of the others is fruit based wine). You can also go apple, cherry, strawberry, or raspberry picking depending on the season - no real recs on places to do this, as most will have signs out advertising that you can do it.

If you like spas - I highly, highly recommend The Spa at Sacred Grounds. FANTASTIC services!

For restaurants - Mission Grille, in Sister bay, is really good (very pricey, but very good!). The Cookery, in Fish Creek, has wonderful breakfasts (lots of cherry based items!). Chef's Hat Cafe in Ephraim is absolutely wonderful - it's a little off the main road (hard to find) but completely and totally worth it!

Washington Island is fun - you can take the ferry over and then rent bicycles and bike around the island. They have some nice beaches and fun things to do there as well. DH and I usually do the biking.

The state park (I believe Penninsula State Park?) is usually the place people camp at - but here's the link to all the other parks. They're tons of fun to hike and go through too!

     HTH - and have fun!

  • Wow ladies, I can't even tell you how awesome and helpful this is!! Your suggestions are great, and I'm getting so excited! We will be going in July, so it is during peak season, and it sounds like there are so many fun things to do. I've copied this post so I can save it and use it while we are planning. Thank you so very much!

  • I LOVE Door County!!  I worked there for 2 summers so I have lots of recs!  Definatly go to breakfast at The Village Cafe in Egg Harbor!!  YUM!!  Do a sunset dinner at Fred & Fuzzy's Bar and Grill in Sister Bay (at the Little Sister Resort, that is where I worked).  There is a very cool art place in Egg Harbor (I think).  They have paint your own pottery, mosaic, stained glass, etc.  It's so much fun!
