After reading the Trader Joes post below, I just wanted to clarify. Is the sell of wine prohibited inside grocery stores in TN? I'm new to Nashville, and I was planning on trying a new recipe this week that calls for white wine....so when I go grocery shopping tomorrow, can I purchase the wine at the grocery store or do I have to make a special trip to a liquor store?
I know this probably sounds like a silly question to some, but I'm still learning the area so I want to have the heads up on the topic.
TIA!
Re: Q: Buying Wine in TN
Are you sure your recipe doesn't call for white cooking wine? Cooking wine and drinking wine are totally different. You'll be able to find cooking wine in a grocery store, but not drinking wine.
BUT- any professional chef will tell you to use drinking wine anyway if a receipe calls for red/white wine, as it gives off a better flavor : )
Oh yeah, definitely use decent quality drinking wine for cooking!! But that's for a different post
One other, if it matters to you (or your DH) - you can't buy beer in a liquor store. (Except for a few speciality beers with a really high alcohol content. Basically, you can't buy anything in a liquor store except liquor and wine - no glasses, no beer, no wine bags, no mixers (except a few that actually contain a small percentage of alcohol). Beer only at gas stations and grocery stores (except during some period like midnight to noon on Sunday). Liquor stores are not open at all on Sundays, but you can buy liquor by the glass at a restaurant. . . .
Definitely crazy, and takes some getting used to!
yeah, we were very confused when we first moved here! No wine in grocery stores at all. Beer is sold every day (after 12p on sundays) in the grocery stores, though.
Oh, and you can't get beer in the liquor store either. It makes no sense!! Why they don't just have everything under one roof (like everywhere else) is a mystery to me.
Good luck with the wine purchase!!!!
It really does suck. Legislation is introduced every year to change it, and the ONLY reason it's still law is the lobbying power of the liquor industry in the state. Of course they want to retain exclusive rights to sell wine.
If it makes you all feel any better, though, we're actually not the only ones who have to deal with this--there are 16 other states where it's illegal to sell wine in grocery stores.
cj-
but of those 16 states how many make it illegal to sell beer in the liquor store? that is what is backassward in TN... that you can't just go to one spot whether a grocery store or a liquor store and pick up everything you need for a party, beer, wine, tequila and mixers.... and maybe some cute umbrellas for your drinks :-)
