Traveling to SD, tips for wineries?

I am going to SD with my husband next weekend (Actually Sun-Wed) for a business trip. We have a few free days while we are there and were thinking about renting a vehicle and driving to some wineries. A friend that used to live in the area recommended that we go to Temecula but I don't even know where to start looking for which wineries we should go to or anything. Could you ladies give me recommendations for wineries, restaraunts etc that you would recommend? Also is there a good website I should visit that may help me plan our day?

I have also heard that we should check out Coronado? Island. Any tips or suggestions for this location?

I apologize for butting in on your local board but maybe someone can help? Thank you so much in advance!!

Re: Traveling to SD, tips for wineries?

  • Have lunch at the Smokehouse at Ponte.

My favorite wineries are South Coast, Thornton and Wilson Creek. I grew up in Temecula.

Check out the trip advisor Temecula forum. I did a huge winery review there Smile

  • South Coast, Thornton and Wilson for sure!  You have to try the almond champagne....sooo good!  We had it at our wedding.

  • Here is a link with a list of wineries:

What kind of wine do you like? If you like reds you should go to Wiens for sure. Thorton has an amazing couve rouge champange and you get to sit while you taste. Everyone loves the almond champange at Wilson Creek but I personally think it's over rated and too sweet. I am in the minority of minorities here though so you will probably like it. You basically just take the 15 north to Rancho California road and head east. All of the major wineries are right off of Rancho a few miles in. They aren't hard to find.

    Have fun!

This. Also, I'm not a big fan of Wilson Creek in general-I think they're overrated and if you do go exacatly when it opens, it just is way too crowded.

I really like Renzoni-it's off the beaten track and much more personalized experiance.

  • There is also the san pasqual winery in Escondido, from the pictures I have seen it looks really nice!
