Best Beach in TX?

And any beach house/condo recs, please.

Re: Best Beach in TX?

  • Ooh, glad you posted this...I've been trying to talk David into a beach trip this summer even if it is on the Texas coast and he isn't wanting to do Texas beaches at all. I know it's not optimal, just thought it would be more cost efficient. He wants to do Destin, Florida or something like that.

Before it was torn apart, I'd say Galveston.  Other than a friend's house being condemned, I'm not sure what the state of their beachfronts and properties are now though.

We've always enjoyed Rockport. (outside of Corpus)  We never rented there since relatives owned a beach house there, but it's a neat town that's fun but still quiet.  I'm sure you could find some good deals online.

  • FWIW - the last time we went to the coast was around 10 years ago and we went to the Port Aransas area and really liked it, but other than Galvestion, Port Aransas and Corpus, I'm not really familiar with any of the other areas / beaches down there.
  • My parents go to Rockport a lot and really like it. I've heard good things about it lately but I don't know a lot of details. I have a friend going there for a bachelorette party in a couple weeks and I can ask her about it when she goes - I don't know how soon you are planning on going...

Port Aransas is nice, I've been there before.

  • MY DH is from Rockport.  It is a very cute town.  We have rented a house in Key Allegro before and it's a nice area.  There are tons of houses and condos for rent there on vrbo.com

  • I have researched the heck out of all of this for our summer vacation. Looked into Rockport and South Padre but once it was all said and done I figured if I am going to make a long drive, I would rather go all the way to Destin. I just booked our trip there in sandestin for 5 nights and the 1 bedroom condo was around 900 with taxes and cleaning fees, etc. The condo was open in 06 and comes with a pack n play and high chair. This is just to give you a rough estimate cause I know my biggest factor was cost.

Good luck! I know I am looking forward to a much needed vacation!

  • I would def recommend South Padre, but I agree...if you can...go to Destin.  It is absolutely beautiful!!

The fun thing about Padre is that you are so close to Mexico, you can drive to the border and walk over.  Lots of good food, drinks and cheap shopping. :)

  • I wonder if you really save all that much $ doing Tx instead of just going to florida or mexico or something?

We've found a lot of deals traveling just bc so few people are doing it right now it's become really affordable. We asked our hotel in NYC for a cheaper rate and I think we're staying in a $250/night hotel for like $115/night. And if you're taking kiddos I noticed funjet has a thing for kids to fly, stay, and eat for only $99 or something!

  • If you don't want to drive to Destin -- you can get great deals on AA sometimes direct from DFW to Mobile (MOB) and then you can drive the two hours -- I've seen them as low as $140 and 180 round trip including taxes.  Great deals on VRBO for condos there.  Look in the Santa Rosa Beach area -- usually cheaper.  Pensascola Beach also has good deals.

You can also fly DFW to Pensacola and drive an hour.

We take lots of weekend trips to Florida, sometimes even just for a day, so feel free to let me know if you have any questions!  Late summer, early fall is cheapest -- but you also run the risk of hurricanes.

Amie and I are going to Destin next weekend!  She's flying into Pensacola and I'm picking her up on my way over.  Woo hoo!  :)
